A local pawn shop is advertising this 4" nickel plated Model 10-6. No serial number available in the ad so hard to date it by appearance alone. I did notice it has a pinned barrel and the spur nose hammer. In another photo I didn't see an obvious "N" on the rear of the cylinder to indicate factory nickel finish. I'm guessing not S&W stocks. I know the one photo isn't much to go on but can anyone help to narrow down any more what I found? They are asking $700.
Thanks guys

The other photos they have posted aren't really clear enough to see if the "N" is on the cylinder or not. However the frame and barrel stampings don't appear to have been dulled out by refinishing or buffing. Also looks to have the heavy barrel. I looked at auction listings that range from sold at about $600 to for sale at $900 -1000.

Certainly not the original grips. Production of the 10-6 spanned a good deal of time, from 1962 to 1977. The finish isn't obviously non-factory, but it's hard to tell for sure from a photo. Might be a former Detroit P.D. gun, they ordered their issue S&W's in nickel for many years.

Just my thoughts...others more experienced will add more perspective. If you can evaluate it hands on and it appears factory origninal finish then its probably a fair deal. Those grips are likely either rogers or safariland. Made of a nylon or plastic and are somewhat collectable to some folks who like these (I think) early to mid 80's style of grips. I see them on ebay from $50 to $100.

Maybe you can try to offer $625 or $650

If I needed nickel 10-6 id probably end up getting regardless...if condition and function was good and making sure no blemishes. A little gentle wear is ok in my opinion.

Thanks for the replies. I might go and give it a closer look see. I've dealt with the guy before and he isn't one for haggling, he probably wouldn't go much lower.
I've been considering a Model 10 to keep my model 36 no dash 3" company but haven't had to scratch that itch yet!

If he doesn't......

If he doesn't counter-offer........walk. Unless you want the gun that bad.

I never buy a handgun without a hands on evaluation. The pictures might look good but other problems might be present, such as rough action, cylinder gap not correct, pitted bore, or on the fairly rare occasion, out of time. I like that bull barrel. If everything checks out, $700 OTD is fair, but not exceptional, in this economy. Just depends on how bad you want it. I would take 6 $100 bills and see if he bites. Good luck.

Rogers grips, the only finger grooves the same diameter as my fingers.
Not a real tough plastic and the black copies are worse, so don't knock them around like a cop would.

With just the left side blown up on my iPad, I see blemishes to examine on the sight, cylinder, and side plate by the front of the grip. As has been mentioned, if the backstrap is engraved Detroit Police, that makes it special to some. Shown are a couple of 64s, maybe both Detroit PD, but one is special to me.

More than I would want to pay but in today's market who knows. Nickel 10's aren't real common, I've only got one in the collection (Detroit PD five inch).

I'm not a fan of Nickel but I know some folks are. I agree with the above poster on value. $400 tops with plastic grips. $700 is WAY too much.

I don't like this gun. Really hard to tell from the photo, but something about the rounded contour of the frame (or, at least, the way the reflection appears in it) that makes me think that this is was replated.

If it's a replate, then I'd just walk from it.

If it's factory, then I'd wager $400 with the plastic grips.
