18,000 dead cows

This was a dairy operation, not a feedlot.

"While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, Rivera told the station it is likely that a vacuum that sucks in manure and blows out water may have gotten overheated and caused methane and other properties to ignite."

KA-BOOM!!!!!!

After subduing the fire at the west Texas dairy farm Monday evening, officials were stunned at the scale of livestock death left behind: 18,000 head of cattle perished in the fire at the South Fork Dairy farm near Dimmitt, Texas – or about 20% of the cattle slaughtered in America on any given day.
Have never been to Dimmit, ain’t never seen a Dairy Farm with 18,000 cows.

Excuse me, y'all, gotta run to the store and buy hamburger while there still is some.

That should keep all the local rendering plants busy for a few weeks. One of Mike Rowe’s most interesting “Dirty Jobs” episodes was him working in a rendering plant. Pretty amazing what goes on there.

My grandfather's dairy operated into the late 1970's. He milked in the neighborhood of 35 cows, twice a day. It was a 1-man operation.

A friend took over an operation in the mid-90's that milked around 100 head, 3 times a day. An 6-person operation.

How many people are employed at an 18,000-cow operation?

We got a good sized Dairy industry here in NM.
Mostly down the East side of the state.

‘The Dairy Industry In New Mexico
New Mexico has approximately 130 licensed dairy herds, with the largest average herd size (2700) in the nation. New Mexico is currently ranked 9th in the nation for milk production and 4th in the nation for cheese production.’
The operations here are pretty large , but not 18,000 Cows.

That was my concern. I can’t imagine a dairy farm operating on a scale that handles that many animals. It would have to be enormous with hundreds of employees.

Theodore Roosevelt bought and moved to a large ranch in the Dakotas in the early 1880’s while grief stricken over the deaths of his young wife ( who had been his childhood sweetheart and a new mother of their child recently born ) and mother. Both died in his house on the same day ( Valentine’s Day ). During the winter of 1886/1887, I think, a record blizzard blew through the Great Plains and Rocky Mountain west. Killed hundreds of thousands of cattle over the course of several days. Something like 60% of the American beef cattle population.
Theodore lost his entire herd. Ruined the ranch financially.
He moved back to New York and resumed his political career.

Blizzard of 1888 left him and many Northern State ranchers with more bills than cattle. Come springtime they skinned out what they could as that was the only income off the cattle.
