OVERUSED WORDS!

"that"

Did you know that the word "that" is overly used?

Did you know the word "that" is overly used?

I've written many technical reports and come up against the foibles of several tech editors. Some love the word "that", while others go ballistic if you use the word "which".

Then there was one guy who seemed to think all sentences should begin with "the" to establish the subject. He would get pretty enraged when dealing with reports written by non-native English speakers, to whom the definite article was an unnecessary appendage to be used sparingly. Some of us (OK, mostly me) would deliberately start structuring our sentences to make damned sure they did not start with "the". At report reviews you could see this guy start to squirm if there were three or more sentences in a row that did not start with "the".

My worst experience was with a tech editor who viewed me the same way he would a child molester because I wrote a report in the active voice. I never got that guy, nor the senior engineer that agreed with him.

Since I've moved to AZ...it annoys me to hear people...especially news people who should know and be trained better...to describe the highways as "the" 101..."the" I-40, etc. It's just "Loop 101" or "Interstate 40". Where did that get started.

When the show "24" was on and a season took place in DC near where I lived and worked...you could tell it was west coast writers...they referred to Interstate 270 as "The 270" which no one in the the east says. The most anyone says about that road is "I hate I-270!" but no road there is called "The" anything.

As mentioned above, I'm so tired of hearing the term "woke". Why can't it mean just what it used to --- what happens to me when the wife gets up to pee in the middle of the night.

Decimate, decimated. Mass. 'Decimated to the last man.' Impossible, there will always be 9 left. Mass shooting when 2 or 3 are killed. I guess the talking heads went to " The" Ohio State University.

If you remember when the first (modern) people who were famous for being famous and not necessarily any actual accomplishment (Paris Hilton, any Kardashian daughter) then you know the roots of the "influencer."

These folks are known by most of the populace and if they actually accomplish anything of note, it's an accomplishment that arrives far after their celebrity has.

Term that I loathe, especially kicked out in gun forums:

"well that's an answer to a question nobody asked..."
