OLD HOLLYWOOD/CELEBRITY PHOTOS

Were John Wayne and Constance Towers
actually firing live ammunition on the set
of 1959's "The Horse Soldiers?"

I would say they almost certainly were. New gun in a new caliber and men who were familiar with guns, yeah, they were shooting live ammo. Different world back then, a lot of actors were actually into shooting as a sport (Robert Stack for instance was a competitive skeet shooter) and they were certainly experienced enough with guns to go shooting on a break from filming (and knew to keep the live stuff separate from the prop stuff!).

Myrna Loy, known widely as the Queen of Hollywood for a good many years (when Clark Gable was known as "The King of Hollywood").

She started in silents and was usually cast as an "exotic" or a vamp. She's actually a small town kid from Montana.

She starred in more movies than one can count. She's Nora Charles in the Thin Man movies and her role in "The Best Years of Our Lives" is simply fabulous.

Not so much a raving "beauty" but I think she defines what the word "cute" means. She's always cute!

A few more Myrna Loy. As mentioned before, early on she was a vamp and an exotic. We have Fu Manchu's daughter. A World War I German spy in Stambull Quest (that's two and three) and a half Egyptian/half English girl in The Barbarian.

Thelma Todd was a good looking girl. She played in one of the Marx Brothers movies, sitting next to Chico as he piano. Stunning.

The television series was called My Living Doll. Julie Newmar was an Air Force prototype cyborg. Her official Air Force designation was AF 709. When they came up with the Star Trek character, the writers were fans of the Newmar show, and named the cyborg woman 7 of 9 in her honor.
