My first Model 14. I think it's beautiful.

I don't own a .38 special with target sights, but have been hankerin' for a 6" Model 14 or older K38 Masterpiece. At a gun show five minutes from my house one couple had a bunch of older sixguns. I saw this 8 3/8" 1973 Model 14 for $795 and got it for $750. It looks pretty new and DA is amazing as is SA. I just wanted a gun to leisurely do target shooting with but not out of my .357s. The grips feel great. These guns cannot enter Cubafornia so they are usually higher priced as we all fight over what's already in the state. I thought the longer barrel might be unwieldy but not the case at all.

I used to have a 8 3/8" but switched to a 6". The longer barrel was fine when I was willing to haul everything around in my Pachmayr Pistol Box. When I switched to a range bag the damn thing didn't fit.

The longer the better. I have several 8 3/8 inchers, but not a model 14.

I don't use a range bag, rather a bullseye match case, with flip up lid and spotting scope. It will even fit my 9 inch Ruger.

That's a beautiful gun, and a very good price anywhere...I can't imagine any legitimate reason for its entry into California being denied, but we should not get into that discussion here......Ben

Nice Model 14 and I like those presentation grips.
I have a couple of Model 14’s, one is a 6” barrel from 1975, and the other is a 8 3/8” full target mfg. in 1978. Both have original boxes and components. I like the long barrels and have several in Model 17’s and Model 27’s.

Great pickup! And since you’re in California, you don’t have to worry about whether or not it is on a list. Being a California gun, I think you got a pretty screaming deal, especially with those grips. I’m sure it being a “Long Tom” was in your favor too. How long before we see that one in a custom leather holster? I know someone that can make you one......wait, never mind!
Larry

PS - I don’t want to see you spinning that thing. YES, I DO!

Last week I asked here if $700 was too much for a late 40s 6" M&P .38 special with magna grips and the older pre war looking hammer spur. The answer was yes. Well, the people with the Model 14 had an excellent 5" version of that M&P for $495. I told my buddy someone said on this forum that there was a pretty small window of time when the M&P with the older hammer and magnas combined were made so that made it a little more interesting. So he bought it. I passed on it because I wanted the Model 14.

Agree it is a beauty. I personally don’t care for the longer barrels, but if it works for you great.
I also understand in California you have slim pickings with associated higher prices.

Here in CA you see them on Consignment at Turners occasionally. Usually if its a 14 it was a LEO's gun their children or grandchildren inherited. Especially if the finish is worn and a 36 also comes up at the same shop.

I had a six inch 14 when I was a LEO with Federal 158 grain LRN

Thinking about the long barreled 14 I bought it reminded of “The Onion Field” which I last saw maybe 30 years ago. I remember the detective’s gun had a very long barrel and adjustable sights. It seemed longer than 6” in my mind. but I knew I had to be wrong and it was probably 6”. Like I think the Adam 12 guys carried for a while. Sure enough that’s what I found it to be.
BTW, Istill have a few Sgt. Rock 12 cent comic books from the late 60s but a bunch of “Nick Fury And His Howlung Commandos”.
