My last job before I joined the military was as a stock-boy at a Five and Dime...and everyone probably had the local busy bodies.
The last one was also known as the "neighborhood watch". Every kid in the neighborhood knew they better behave or your parents ears would be burning before you could make it to the front door.
Of course they also had cold water from the hose free for the asking and occasionally a sweet treat for the neighborhood kids.
