I know why so many are unlicensed or unregistered.

Went down to the Ma. Registry of Motor Vehicles..excuse me..the MassDOT is their new name.. to renew my CDL drivers license. I had gone online and pre-applied and printed out the confirmation, but you have to go in person to formalize everything. Swell. It's an hr away in the big chity.

I get my appointment time online of 10:40..and show up 20 minutes early..BUT they can't log me in. Meanwhile people coming in late can log in and they get their deli ticket to WAIT for a teller (23 windows..7 tellers working)before me.

While waiting in line (again) a person in front of me asks me to back up because they are "claustrophobic". I tell them to step forward if you need room or go outside. People.

I get to a teller about 11:20 (so much for my 10:40 appt) and hand over my paperwork. She tells me my Passport has expired (she found this out online as I did not bring in a passport, as I wasn't told to so in the pre-registration process..!!!) and unless I have a certified copy of my birth certificate (why would I??) she can't process my renewal.

I tell her I was born about 5 miles from here 65 years ago in this very chity. She tells me to prove it. Ug. I have a certified copy...at home. Not good enough. Not even a photo of it will help.

Grrr..!!!

So....I have to leave with..nuffin!! To say I was steaming is an understatement. !!!!!

Meanwhile... the 50 Venezualian refugees that are there with their Govt. handlers (interpreters etc) are all happy to be getting their new drivers licenses,no charge!!

Seriously..this country is in deep trouble..

With todays online DMV;

you need to read the fine print and make sure at the end of the run,
it states that you are good to go or approved.

Print out this "Green light" info so they can't mess with you, if
you need to go down in person.

I typed out a form for myself on getting a new license plate because of them making me jump through hoops and delays by phone and the net.

It had that they either;
refused or
issued me, a new plate and tag, for them to sign !!

I got my new plate & sticker, after their manager took over and let the agent move out of the cubical, to watch, how she fixed the problem, while being very polite.

Here in the south, the reply to Mr. Claus Trophobia would be, “Well, bless your heart!”

I’ve had smooth interactions with DMV, and I’ve had some that made me stomp out in a fury, making me appreciate the reason for the “no guns” sign on the door.

I guess some systems are better or worse than others.
In Ohio most representatives for the OH BMV for licenses and vehicle registrations are handled by "civilian appointment deputy registrars". My local deputy registrars office changed hands several years ago and it made a huge difference in the quality of service.
Just 3 weeks ago, I walked in on a Wednesday at 1:00pm and before I could even log in on their customer tablet a clerk called me to the counter and within about 5 minutes I walked out with 2 renewals for my car and trailer. The facilities are clean and if the staff are not waiting on customers, they are wiping down counters, restocking their supplies or other productive activities.
Great service.
Last year, when I renewed my drivers license, I decided I wanted my full complete name, first middle last on my new drivers license (it has always only had my middle initial). I brought a cerified copy of my birth certificate and current US passport, the clerk completed the ID change request form without any hesitation, I was given a paper proof of renewal "license" and I was informed the new official drivers license would be mailed to my home in approximately 2 weeks. I actually received my new drivers license at the house in about 1 week. Once again, great service.
I have witnessed these clerks suffer all kinds of abuse when folks show up without the required forms, ID or documents that are State mandated and clearly posted in multiple spots as required NO EXCEPTIONS.
As appointees, the deputy registrar can lose their appointment if it is discovered that they have failed to follow the State's guidelines.

I really feel for you folks who have to deal with BMV/DMV offices that perpetuate the truly horrible stereotype.

Here in California the typical situation is that you get a notice that your drivers license is set to expire in 30 days. And you can't renew online but you must appear in person to get an up to date photo taken, or take the written test again. Fine.

Then you go online to make an appointment and the soonest appointment available is in 45 to 60 days. So you start searching the branch offices for one that has an available appointment prior to your license expiring. You find one, but it is in a city that is a 100 mile round trip away. Where do our very high vehicle related fees go ? It sure isn't to running an efficient department.

I’ve had my CDL for over 45 years. Same address etc for 32 years….in Massachusetts. Same everything. They have access to those records.

Yet..I must return with my “sacred birth certificate”…tomorrow for another attempt at getting my license/credentials renewed.

That’s what bothers me the most. I followed their rules. There was no demand/questions for a valid Passport or certified birth certificate on their pre-qualify questionnaire. If it’s that critical it should have been requested.Period. No warning. Not fair. They could have overlooked it but instead I got a signed letter of nonconformity. Swell.

As an aside:

While in the “appointment” line at 10:45 awaiting my deli ticket I overheard an “officially attired employee” telling the 50-60 “walk/in” people waiting in “their” line, some for 30plus minutes, to come back at 2;30!!Line closed till then!

Didn’t make me feel any better. Just even more apathy for how poorly they run the place.Pathetic disorganization. Did I mention the 23 windows and only 7-8 “manned”. Can I still even say that without breaking some new guideline? I don’t think so…

For most Arizona transactions, in addition to online options, there are third party vendor locations that are generally much more efficient than the MVD offices.
