My recently acquired Model 10

That came out great, how much was it to reblue and ship back and forth ?
Thank you, it did turn out well. I found the invoice, it was done in 2018. It shows the re bluing was $220 and there is a $45 "PC Firearm Estimate & Range Test". I don't see anything about the shipping. I remember sending it via Fedex and having to send and receive at the Fedex location

Is that 3” barrel or just the camera/smartphone playing tricks on me ?
It certainly looks like a 3". My first thought was that it was a mod 13. I used to work for the UK importer back in the late 1970s, and in those days the mod 10 options were 2" and 4". The mod 13 was 3" and 4 ". But then I looked at the pic and you can see it's marked as .38spl. So, I consulted Mr. Google and found the model 10 3" was offered in the early 80s and discontinued 1990. Apparently there were also some produced specially for foreign orders.

I've got a 3" square butt M10-7. It's my favorite carry revolver.

My Model 10-6 revolver with S&W combat grips.

I gave it to my mom. I got it back after she died.

I never noticed that the top of the barrel has no rib, or that the diameter of the barrel is larger than that of the .357 Magnums, until I read it in this thread.

It was a police gun that I bought in about 1990. It came re-blued and with snow tires, but I later traded them out for the wooden grips.

This is my model 10 that I currently own, I have a new model 10 classic I bought just waiting to pickup from the FFL this week. I am curious how much does a re-bluing job cost, I'm leaning on the fence wither to get this one re-blued.

I would strongly urge you not to do that. You would be paying money to lower the value of the gun. It is only original once.

J&G had them at $400 so I pass.

If you have an option for Duty Weapon I suggest a S&W 686 loaded with 357 Magnum ammunition. Most of my time as a policeman we had revolvers. The 357 is impressive against bad guys.
I agree that if I were carrying for duty I'd probably carry a 586/686. Possibly even a 19.

It’s a Model 10; they won’t be “rare” until the 2200s. I’d reblue it if it’s going to be a carrier.

If it's going to be carried, and if it's going to be a keeper rather than an investment, I'd go with the re-blue.

I have never seen the point in refinishing. A couple of points/ examples:
You have a $300 shooter, you spend $300 on a refinish ,which results in having still a $300 shooter, no value added

You have a $800 somewhat collectible gun, you spend $300 on refinish and you now have a $400 shooter.

You have a finish worn gun you intend to use and carry, you spend $300 on refinish, and in a couple years the finish is worn down again.

For the most part from my experience ( been carrying blued guns now for 40+ years) finish relating to wear and use starts slowly then accelerates for a little while then stabilizes and slows down again.

The most basic of attention and care will prevent a finish worn gun from rusting, so refinishing them doesn’t add anything except cost

In general, I agree with you. But the right side of that gun looks like rust has already started up. If it were my gun, I'd try 0000 steel wool and oil and see how that worked out; if it took care of the surface rust and there was little pitting, I'd probably hit it with some cold blue and call it good.

The guns I've used a lot look like it due to the wear marks from holsters. That's honorable wear, and I've no plans to refinish them. :)

My very best friend recently passed. We went thru the Police Academy together. He was a collector and I took on the task of selling his guns. He had a dozen M 10's and yes....I had to purchase all of them to keep them together. We were both issued the 4" M10 by our respective agency in 1975.
