For the last 2 1/2 years our 4-limbed birdfeeder has kept the tree rats from getting to either of the 4 hanging individual birdfeeders. The tree rats have been trying to get past the baffle or jump from the bird bath to get to them and have not even come close. Evidently they have recruited a steroid-induced ringer that can jump Michael Jordan distances to get to and empty the bird feeders. I chased him off once and moved the feeder he was grabbing to a different place. That sucker came back and jumped from the bird bath an even longer jump and grabbed a different bird feeder and climbed all over them. Ok, sucker, This is WAR! I went out, chased him off again and moved the bird bath another 5 ft. or so from the feeder to see it that will work. If not, he will be introduced to Mr. Crossman. Eat the seed that the birds knock off the feeders on the ground but leave my feeders alone!

This is my solution. I live in town with other houses in all directions, so any type of hard projectile is a no go. Besides this introduces a bit of a challenge and fun.

Similar problem here in the Piedmont area. Those tree rats just keep pushing the limits. However, they do help me improve my skills with my Gamo .117 Varmint Air Rifle.

Get a Havaheart trap and a bag of raw peanuts. I've carried off over 100+ tree rats. There is no end to them, you just make sure they don't come back for seconds.

Stupid City Squirrels

When I lived in the back of one of our apartment complexes, I used a Have-a-hart trap and a trash can full of water to rinse away my tree rat problem.

We decided that we were wasting good hunting squirrels and relocated them to a woods that belonged to my best friend's family. As it got close to squirrel season, I ask how our stocked woods was doing? Stupid city squirrels! They as a group went down the road to a different farmer's house and sat on the front porch begging for Welfare (handouts) The farmer gave them ammo at no charge! Stupid City Squirrels!

I live in a small town of about 218,000 people.

We have no real animal control.

We do have bobcats, hawks and coyotes. Yes, in this 'little' township. Ha.

They, collectively, do a fairly good job of reducing the squirrel and rabbit population.

For the most part.

I used to document my efforts in helping them.

In a 24 month period, (2020-2021) I dispatched 60 rabbits from my OWN yard.:D

In a 12 month period, (2021) I dispatched 26 squirrels from my OWN yard.

MY YARD alone.

Good gosh. The population of critters in this town is epidemic.

That's not counting the rat and mice population.

I see that one of the reasons is that cats aren't allowed to roam freely. I agree with that, but, they could really help reduce the critter population.

I don't even keep a count anymore. Too time consuming.:)

Several years ago, we had a squirrel problem.

I live trapped over 20 tree rats and relocated them to spots at least 5 miles away. Didn’t seem to reduce the squirrel population at my house.

I read up on the rats and discovered they have a homing instinct that rivals homing pigeons. I wondered whether rats i trapped and relocated were coming back so I started painting a green stripe on the rats before I relocated them.

I started seeing squirrels around the house with green paint. When I trapped one with green paint, I added a red paint stripe and relocated them even further away. Any squirrel I trapped with red paint got a 22bb cap in the noggen while still in the live trap.

I I killed 27 red striped squirrels that summer.

Don’t imagine that relocating squirrels will have any lasting impact on nuisance squirrel populations.

Small town????? That's more than 10 times the population of my county!

I relocate tree rats to Valhalla with whatever is handy when i catch them on a raid. My dog gathers up the casualties and buries them in the woods.
Ah country living.

The squirrels' built-in early warning system helps protect them from talons.
I noticed the doves feed more freely when a squirrel is on watch.

I have a Have-a-hart trap but there are always 3 or 4 tree rats under the birdfeeder so I have no idea which one is the culprit. But since I moved the bird bath farther away they seem to have no interest in trying to jump from it to the feeders. I wish someone made a rubber bb so I could just sting that sucker instead of really harming it if I decide to shoot it with the Crosman . But so far moving the bird bath is working.

Some of the funniest YouTube time wasters are people attempting to keep squirrels from their bird feeders.
When it comes to urban survival skills I think we come in a distant 3rd (real rats are #2) when attempting to taking on a squirrel 'humanly'.

squirrel problem solved.

I have a very big owl(I think it's called Barred) that lives in the woods behind our development. If a squirrel meets an untimely demise, the big owl swoops down and has a feast.

Very handy arrangement.
