Do many of you use an air fryer? My spouse got an up scale model
Dual Instant Vortex Plus.

The first trial was cube steaks and French fries. The fries were dry and blah. The cube steaks were fed to the garbage. Another bust I thought.

Last night it was fish. Absolutely delicious. The best I've had in a long time.:D

On the down side the stench from the machine was really bad. My wife said next time she'll put it on top of the stove so the exhaust fan will take the smell away.

Is this going to be a very useful item or a waste of money?

I wouldn't use one. People are fascinated today with second-rate gadgetry that serves little or no purpose and aren't real particular about what they eat as long as it's easy to fix. Learn to cook instead. It's not difficult and much of what people use an "air fryer" for can be prepared better in an oven.

As already mentioned, they take up space as well.

It's a learning experience . . . makes great chicken, and like you say, fish. Beef takes a learning curve . . . and I'm still learning.

Never was a great fan of chicken legs until we got one and I discovered a recipe for a spice blend that is pretty tasty. The great thing about that also is in our area I've been able to find the chickie legs on sale fairly regularly for 89-99 cents a pound. When I find that price I stock the freezer up and can throw a dozen in the air fryer at a time for between 3 or 4 bucks. Plenty of dinner for me and the missus and leftovers for lunch the next day to boot.

Yeah, if you don't have storage space they do take up a bit - I resisted buying one but don't regret finally biting the bullet. Like the crock pot - you just have to learn how to take advantage of it.

We got one as a gift. The first one didn’t work nor did the second. Third time a charm. VERY cheaply made. So cheap they didn’t ask for the first two to be returned.
Smells bad until you use it a few times, guess the plastic vents off.

We marinate chicken breast and put them in the air fryer. Tastes pretty good and clean up is easy.

I wouldn’t buy one but as a gift it’s OK.

When the Instant Pot Vortex first came out, we bought one. Still use it. We really like it. Fast than the oven, especially since there is now just the two of us.

My wife bought a large countertop Emeril Lagasse model a couple of christmases ago. It looks like an oversized toaster oven. We cook everything in it that will fit. No need to fire up the range oven except for large roasts and turkeys, etc. I also found that it makes an excellent brass drier. It holds three tiers of the mesh baskets, and I’ve put about 750-800 10mm cases in it at one time.

Sounds like what folks used to say when the micro wave first came out.

An air fryer is a very useful kitchen accouterment, imho.

Living alone I don't fix big meals but I do use a larger countertop toaster oven a lot. The last one I bought is a Kitchenaid and it came with an air fryer slide-in basket/tray and has an air fryer mode. The countertop oven/air fryer gets used several times a week so I don't have to fire up the full sized oven. There definitely has been a learning curve to using the air fryer settings but I have learned to really appreciate the speed and lack of odors you normally get from deep frying things like frys, fish, shrimp and so on. (I have a strong aversion to the smell of hot cooking oil, ever since I had my gall bladder removed.) I also don't have much storage space for dedicated countertop appliances, so the combo oven works really well for me.

We cook everything from frozen frys to chicken fish and venison steaks. Thick venison steaks with Montreal seasoning for 6-8 min depending how you like them. Perfect everytime. Same for boneless skinless chicken breast.

I don't know how you usually cook, but it sounds like everything was in there too long. Any cooking device using forced hot air requires that you reduce your cooking time considerably. I recall the cookbook that came with my fan oven back in the UK had cooking times that led to much shaking of heads to those used to a regular gas or electric oven.

Had one a while back. Loved it, my +1 thought it was a pain because it was always in the way. Great for chicken and burgers. I wouldn't do a steak in there. A whole chicken is awesome. crispy skin. Cooks faster and cleaner than the oven.
