Anybody here ever reloaded for .45 Auto Rim { not 45 ACP } ? The auto rim cartridge allows you to shoot .45 caliber ACP revolvers without using moon clips .
My RCBS universal hand primer tool will not accept the thicker rim of the auto rim brass to install the primer .
The primer tool works fine with the thinner 45 acp rim , but not the auto rim.
Just wondered what I was missing ?

So your primer tool doesn't accept different shell holders?

It will not accept the auto rim base { rim } into the tool for loading the primer into the brass . The rim seems to be too thick . ACP fits fine.

I am not sure but I think the OP has a priming tool that does not use shell holders but has a universal tool that supposedly accepts all case heads. I have such a tool for APS strips but I think RCBS also made such a tool for using loose primers.
If that is the case I do not know how to solve the problem short of asking RCBS for help. Bottom line is your priming tool may not accept Auto Rim brass.

This is the RCBS Universal hand priming tool I am referring to . There are no shell holders involved .

Beware: I bought two new Universals several years ago. Neither would fully seat a primer with 100% reliability. Every primer had to be checked (I do this regardless of the primer seater used) and about 5% or more were not fully seated. Also, the effort required to seat was more than what was normally required.

The RCBS handpriming tool that required shellholders was a much better one. I returned both Universals, but maybe I just bought a couple of bad ones.

The RCBS Universal tool is advertised as accepting cases from 32acp to 45-70.
From comments on the net I gather that the 45AR has a rim that is too thick (about .083) to work in the universal fit 'jaws' of the mechanism.

I have used these universals for many years, never had any issues. Just trying to figure out why I can not use it for auto rim brass .

No, you must have taking typing in school, while I was in shop class. Ergo, you type faster than I do!😁

I did take a typing class in adult education after I graduated high school. I majored in Electronics shop in my junior and senior years in high school.

Apparently my typing class didn't pay off as I am still a very unusual typist. Fast yes, accurate no.

Seems to be the problem, but is there a "fix" ?

Took metal and wood shop for four years in High School. Went in the Corps and ended up as an aircraft electrician for 24 years............So I guess shop did not work for me.....

I had trouble with the RCBS universal on .32 caliber stuff, and then .45 AR when I started loading that. I bought the RCBS hand primer that uses shell holders back when I had issues with the .32 stuff, so I just had to track down a #13 for the .45 AR. I also had to buy the .45AR caliber conversion kit for my Dillon 550 and a #13 Lee x-press shell holder for my APP to decap the AR rounds. I’m all set now, but when I first got into the .45AR round, I didn’t research the fact that everything is practically proprietary for loading it.

I actually ended up buying a second 550 caliber conversion kit because I had misplaced the first one and couldn’t find it when I thought I finally had everything together to finally start loading it. So if you’re loading on a 550 and haven’t picked up the conversion kit yet, hit me up and we can work out a trade or something.

Looks like a primer tool that accepts a shell holder for the auto rim.
