45 Auto Rim primer installation

The thicker rim of the AR case will not work in the shell holder in your device. Either get a proper shell holder for the AR cartridge or a different priming tool.

Rocket science? Not really, cartridge fit, yep.

Kevin

There are NO shellholders used on the Universal priming tool. See my attached pictures in post # 6 .

The RCBS Universal tool is advertised as accepting cases from 32acp to 45-70.
From comments on the net I gather that the 45AR has a rim that is too thick (about .083) to work in the universal fit 'jaws' of the mechanism.

It will work on the .45AR, but it slips a lot and it makes for slow going. It was just too frustrating for me. I don’t like to concentrate on the priming process when I’m doing it, just want it to be mindless repetition so I can sit in the air conditioned house and watch tv while priming.

I had trouble with the RCBS universal on .32 caliber stuff, and then .45 AR when I started loading that. I bought the RCBS hand primer that uses shell holders back when I had issues with the .32 stuff, so I just had to track down a #13 for the .45 AR. I also had to buy the .45AR caliber conversion kit for my Dillon 550 and a #13 Lee x-press shell holder for my APP to decap the AR rounds. I’m all set now, but when I first got into the .45AR round, I didn’t research the fact that everything is practically proprietary for loading it.

I actually ended up buying a second 550 caliber conversion kit because I had misplaced the first one and couldn’t find it when I thought I finally had everything together to finally start loading it. So if you’re loading on a 550 and haven’t picked up the conversion kit yet, hit me up and we can work out a trade or something.

I use a RCBS single stage rocker crusher . Thanks , anyway.

Well, there must be something I'm missing, because the Starline 45 AR brass will not fit into the jaws of my priming tool, at all .

I don't think it's you.

Well, I just can't believe that this problem has never come up before . That was the big reason for posting my question on this forum.
I have sent RCBS an email , but who knows how soon I'll get a reply.

Maybe it will but the priming tool you own will not work on the 45 Auto Rim cases. You can post all you want, it still won't work.

I prime pistol brass [autorim too]on my presses, Dillon 550s and Lyman T2s. Use the old Lee autoprime for rifle brass. Sounds like the op has a defective priming system. Not really universal. Time to upgrade.

Not defective, 45 AR is the only caliber { I reload for 11 different calibers } that I have ever had any issue with.

I have been using an old Lee hand priming tool which uses conventional shell holders for years and it works fine with .45 AR. Anything sold as being "Universal" may well not be.

I use the RCBS hand primer for everything I load except 45 Auto Rim. Reason: 45 Auto Rim is too thick to fit into the universal jaws of the hand primer. You must find another way to prime them. I prime them on my rock chucker where you can use the 45 AR shell holder.

^THIS^
I found this out many moons, ago.
Used a Lee for years. When that wore out I went with Franklin.
Uses dedicated Lee shell holders for each caliber.
As God intended:
Frankford Arsenal Platinum Series Perfect Seat Hand Priming Tool

Durable, well made STEEL parts, adjustable primer depth,
better mechanical advantage.

Not sure, but I think that that is because you haven't yet tried .50 BMG with it. Will it prime those?

Simple problem, you can’t use 45Colt or 45acp shell holder to load either.
Just get correct shell holder.

Simple answer...the universal priming tool does NOT use a shell holder . Again, see my pictures in my earlier post NUMBER 6.

Well a lot of people are missing out on the fact that Roofuss is using a RCBS "UNIVERSAL" hand primer. It does not take shell holders, just has a spring to hold the cartridge in place.

The Original Poster is missing the fact that the "UNIVERSAL" hand primer will not work on the 45AR.

The fix will be to get the original style of hand primer RCBS makes that takes shell holders. :)
