Was at a LGS yesterday just browsing, nice place and the owner does take care of me from time to time..anyway, a guy comes in that looks to be in his mid 30’s looking to buy his first handgun. I’m sitting there on a stool listening to this guy ask the owner if he has a gun like the “one Tom Cruise used in the movie Collateral”... When he told him he believed that was a HK .45 but he didn't have one in stock but had a number of nice 45’s the guy said “how about the one like Clint Eastwood carried in Dirty Harry”.

He shows him a model 29-2 that was a bit ragged at $1,200. The guy said that's way to big, Clint must have huge hands.

The owner gave me a look as if asking for help! The guy looked around for a bit and said he'd do some more research and come back.

When the guy left he looked at me and we started cracking up! :D

Now that's the way you pick a handgun! :)

Several ways of looking at it. Yeah, it is amusing, but obviously no mentors or experienced acquaintances he could go to for guidance. So he is to be pitied and guided (if possible). Training to be recommended . . . and unfortunately there are more of them out there than us (getting more so every day as we old fogies pass) and they vote and procreate, so the field is ripe to harvest to make converts and educated gun owners out of such.

Have run into some with no knowledge like this guy that refuse to learn or accept advice. Best thing to do if you encounter that type and he insists is to smile and take his money . . . not ideal but the next guy will probably sell to him anyway . . .

As for stocks, I find the Magna stocks to be a lot more comfortable for shooting than the target stocks that usually come on N-frames, but hand sizes vary.

I can think of several "movie guns" I'd like to get.

Yep. Me too...but I have yet to find a Star Wars Blaster at any of our local gun shows.:(

Once Upon a Time........

I was sittin' around watchin' Die Hard on TV, with my first wife.
I said " I must be the only guy in the world that does not have an HK MP5 submachinegun."
She looks at me & says "Get one".
The next day, I ordered a MP5KSD from RDTS. 8 months later, I took possession of it. Bought an M16A1 while was at the dealer, pickin' up the HK.

Many don't realize that they own movie guns. The Star Model B and B Super was a frequent stand-in for the 1911 in a multitude of movies. Other, less well known, Star models appear in numerous movies. I suspect that it because they were cheap to acquire and they look different. The director wants it obvious which is the good guy's gun versus the bad guy's shooter.

They are out there... I chose to build mine from a kit, but there are folks that will build you one. I even know of a guy that builds live fire versions on real Broomhandles.

Star wars blaster and prop replicas are a minor hobby of mine... I find it fascinating how some of the original 1970s props were built out of piles of surplus WWII junk in England. ;)

WRT the OP and the novice shooter, how many of us were inspired to the shooting hobbies by what we saw in film and TV as youngsters? Maybe with the right guidance, this gentleman can find a lifetime of enjoyment in the shooting sports?

Those are pretty cool! I am a big fan of Star Wars since I was a child. Nice collection.

I do agree, movies that drew many of us into shooting probably helped inspire the desire, but that guy needs some help on choosing a proper first gun! :D

Oh Lord...

Yeah, I can just imagine some novice getting one of them "Dirty Harry" guns and taking it to the range for the first time... ...
:D After Dirty Harry hit the theaters and the unexpected backlog of orders at S&W had cleared, apparently there were a lot of ads for "S & W Model 29 .44 magnum, barely used. 1/2 box of ammo included."

Looks like the result of a one-night stand between a Nambu and a horse syringe

In the classic "Zulu!" with Michael Caine, Stanley Baker etc., they were equipped with WW1-era Webley revolvers as they were readily available and the historically-correct Adams Mk.III or Webley RIC weren't likely to be loaned out from private collections.

Did have that Colt that the real Deputated Sheriff wore playing a movie Deputy in ‘Lonely Are the Brave.’
It was a hurt Blackpowder Frame 44-40 SA Army.
In a Mexican Buscadera Rig.
