Well after procrastinating since Friday I acquired a 15-1 that appears by the S/N to be from 1971. Not a perfect specimen cosmetically but mechanically in good shape. Came in on trade at the shop I work at.

First handguns I ever purchased were in 1975, a 10-4 heavy barrel which I later transferred to my mother and a Model 15 no dash Combat Masterpiece. I kept the 15 until 1976, sold it at the behest of an ex-fiancee because she didn’t like handguns (or a muscle car that I also was “encouraged” to sell). Got the 10-4 back after my mother passed in ‘98, still have it. I did have the box for it but an ex son in law tossed it out when he and our daughter moved in with us for about a year and a half. I’m still pissed about that bit at least he’s an ex now.

Replaced the car in 1986, similar but one year newer, all restored and still have. The CM has eluded me though until today. I’ve been cleaning and touching up the bluing on and off all day, it looks pretty good now.

Grips were pretty rough, actually an understatement. Pulled them off, not original to,this gun via the numbers so I put on a pair of Magnas I have. And a friend has a set of Magnum grips that I’ll pick up this week. A couple of tiny rust spots on the trigger and hammer, some Wilson Combat oil and 0000 steel wool lightly applied takes care of that.

So, off to the range sometime this week to see how it performs. And my original assessment when I saw it was “pass”……

A 15-1 has a 4-screw frame and would be from about 1961.

I'll move this to the S&W Hand Ejectors: 1896 to 1961 section.

Note the descriptive subtitle:
"All 5-Screw & Vintage 4-Screw SWING-OUT Cylinder REVOLVERS, and the 35 Autos and 32 Autos"

I own a pretty good collection of S&W revolvers and my two M15's (Combat Masterpieces) are about my all time favorite ones. The are what I used for PPC matches, revolver shooting competitions, target shooting and general plinking. While I do like my M19's, M586, M10, M36's M60's, etc. etc. my go to .38 Spl. is always a M15. IMHO the M15 could be the best they ever made and has withstood the test of time.
