What Deer Cartridge This Year

I’ll be using my much used pre 64 Winchester Model 70 featherweight 30-06 mfg date 1956, with a vintage Bushnell 4x Scope Chief and Federal 150 grain SP rounds.

Hope you get a nice Buck!

Good luck. I would choose the model 70 Winchester. Those Federal 150s are also an excellent choice.
I have the exact rifle same year. But, I have a Swarovski 3-9×36 on top. That rifle will take anything on the North American continent.

Let's see. I have a Ruger American in .243 Winchester and a Smith-Corona 03A3 .30-06. An M1A SOCOM in .308, an FR8 .308 and a .308 Jungle carbine are stand-byes as well.

For muzzleloaders, I have a Parker-Hale 1858 Naval Rifle in .577 and a Parker-Hale 1861 musketoon. The rifle has a 33" barrel and the musketoon has a 24" barrel. I also have a Navy Arms 1803 Harpers Ferry in .58.

So many choices. :)

If I was still hunting the 38-55 Ballard would finally get blooded. The Winchester 1885 in 38-40 would be considered as would the old stand by 30-30 Winchester 1894 which has accounted for numerous deer.

OP, I once worked at Remington and bought a 6.5 x 55 Swedish model 700 for my brother. I witnessed him dump a nice pronghorn in Wyoming at a solid 350 yards. That bullet went through both shoulders. I am also a big fan of the .250-3000 Sav and the .300 Sav having rifles chambered in them. I shot a nice buck with the .303 Sav a few years back.

For over 30 years I used a Ruger#1 in 30-06 with a Leupold VX-III and a Kiplinger single set trigger. It harvested many whitetail, muley's, antelope and even one bison. Old age finally got the best of me and I needed something lighter and with less recoil. Went the lest expensive left hand route with a Savage Axis II in 7mm-08 and mid price range Vertex scope. Only fired one shot opening day this year but it worked.

Here in the free part of America we are not encumbered with all those ammo or magazine limitations. For hunting near fields where I have a longer shot opportunities I use a Ruger M77 MKII All Weather Stainless in .30-06. For close in work in the woods my favorite is a 16 inch barreled Marlin 336Y in .30-30, or a Rossi model 92 saddle ring carbine in .357. Both have been meat getters.

Once I get meat in the freezer I like to transition to fun guns like some of my mil-surp rifles. I've taken several with a M1 Garand and a M1 carbine, one big buck with a Lee Enfield No4 MKII in .303, and a couple with my Russuan SKS.

First up for this year's hunt will be my Ruger M77 in 30-06 with my tried & true 165 gr. bullet load (This has been a favorite since 1973). Next up will be the 1895 Marlin Cowboy with my 405 gr. cast bullets.
While the 6.5x55 Swede #1A, the .257 Roberts M77, and the 7.62x39 CZ have all taken their share of whitetails, they're gonna be resting in the safe at home.

Taking a CZ 550 Mannlicher in 6-5 x 55 for a scoped rifle. An old Winchester 71, 348, with a receiver sight for those bad weather days and still hunting through the laurel and slashing. And a Martini Cadet that has been reworked to the old 35/30-30 wildcat cartridge just for fun... oh yes, and my S&W Model 57.

I have shot a few deer and to tell you the truth never had any trouble killing them with any rifle or handgun with even plain lead bullets. I think in numbers the 35Rem is top. Following 30/06 & 308. Have shot with 22Hornet, 25/20, 32/20, 351win and 30carbine. Also magnums running full scale up to 375H&H.
I haven’t shot enough of other big game to make any claims. Arguing deer guns is Ford - Chevy argument. It ain’t the cartridge in most cases it’s the thing hanging on to the rifle stock.
