Anyone else do the Hurst conversion, moving the shifter to the floor with the long chrome lever that curled back over the seat? Had a 390 Ford long bed Ranger XLT set up that way.

Yep...........55 Chevy 2 dr hardtop. 283 cu in w/4 bbl carb.......Loved that Hurst shifter with big white ball on top.
 
In my "youth" I was a grease monkey and gas pumper in a local station/garage. In the '50's hiding the gas cap seemed to be a favorite thing with designers. Behind the license plate was a favorite and my favorite was under one of the rear brake lights. (I think it was a Caddy)

Hiding the starter button was another puzzle on some cars. Ususally a button hidden somewhere. The one under the clutch pedal actually made sense as you were sure to be out of gear when starting. The best one was a pre-war Buick that it was under the gas pedal. (Made sense as it primed the engine just before the starter engaged)
 
My first vehicle was a 68 Rambler with three on the column and a "powerful" 199 cubic inch straight six. It also had those dreaded vacuum wipers. More than once I had to reach out the window and operate them by hand in a rainstorm.

Only the best for me. Don't get me wrong, it was a reliable little car otherwise - oh, wait, I forgot about the self destructing wiring, the generator rebuild, the brake light switch replacement . . . Nothing electrical was original on that car by the time I sold it. And it wasn't even British.
 
My CJ2 even had a little handle on the wiper motor just at the top of the windshield that you could work by hand when the vacuum dropped.

(Of course on a Jeep you also could just lay the windshield down......}
