Looking at buying a J-Frame .38 special and I was hoping to confirm the model and hopefully learn the year of manufacture. Any and all help is appreciated.

New to this forum so I'll try to follow the ID Guide:

Gun looks like an old Model 36, but has "Airweight" written on the barrel so my brief research makes me think its the aluminum Model 37. No specific model number etched anywhere on the gun.

Gun is a hand ejector, serial number 130***.

Caliber is .38 Special. "Airweight 38 SPL. CTG." etched on right side of barrel. "Smith&Wesson" etched on left side.

1 3/4" barrel length

Fixed Sights

Looks like 3 screws (assuming one is covered by the aftermarket grip)

Black/Blued frame

Thank you for any assistance!

Welcome aboard from ol' Wyo.

Yes, sir, you have a .38 Chiefs Special Airweight.

At that serial number S&W might have shipped it in August 1958.
The first known ship date is September 1958 for a.38 Chiefs Special
Airweight with "MOD-37" stamped on the frame in the yoke cut.

Unreal speed on the ID. Thank you very much!

Check closely for a longitudinal frame crack on the bottom of where the barrel screws into the frame.

Thanks for the heads up. No cracks, it’s in real good condition. Does not look like it has been fired much.
