Music You Enjoy

Soprano Leontyne Price turned 97 today

Opera isn't everyone's cup of tea, and though I worked for an opera company for 20+ years, I don't listen to it much. But this morning when I turned on my go-to online station, I heard this absolutely stunning voice singing "Vissi d'arte" from Tosca and was nearly turned to tears. It was Price, played in honor of her birthday. Later, I also heard her sing "O Patria Mia" from Aïda, a role which launched her career at the Met. Somewhere here I have an old LP of her singing Samuel Barber's "Hermit Songs", which she premiered with him in 1953. I must find a CD transfer of that.

This is what brought me to appreciate opera....
One of the orchestra members in Vancouver Opera told me that many years ago an Italian conductor - new to N. America - came in for a production and he was astounded when they told him at a party afterwards that cartoons were the first introduction to opera music for a lot of kids!

As I type this I can still hear Elmer Fudd singing "Kill the wabbit! Kill the wabbit!" to the tune of the Ride of the Valkyries.
