Won a nice Gunbroker auction last night for this Blue S&W Model 49 with original box and paperwork. Very pleased because this is a no-dash and dates to 1973-74. Winning bid was $635 plus shipping if memory serves.

I like the old Bodyguards. They certainly are a bit of an odd duck, but the single action is available should the need arise. It looks like it needs a good cleaning but I'm happy. Another long-time, on the list gun that I now own.

What do you think? Did I do okay on the price?

I bought this 49-no dash used in 1974. Carried it everyday as my second, off duty and undercover for 20 years. Then got a 649 which I've carried since.
Paid $75 for the 49, factory and Herrett grips, 2 leather holsters, 150 rds of WC ammo and 100 rds of 158 gr LRN ammo. I bought it from an FBI SA who had just gotten it back from their gun people in Quantico. The DA is smooth at 8 lbs. SA breaks at 2.5 lbs.
Currently it wears a Barami Hip Grip and is my gun to grab when making a quick run some place. My wife carries it most of the time.

Model 49

I absolutely love the old humpbacks. I've got a bodyguard
and a Model 49. Carried the Bodyguard as my backup and
off duty weapon, and to this day it's still my #1 choice for
EDC.

The Model 49 is from 1983 and have been trying to sell it
locally for several months but so far no takers.

Sell it here

You should sell it here on the forum.

Scuttlebutt has it there are folks on this forum who really like S&W revolvers. :-)

Back when I was looking for a .38 to conceal carry, I looked hard for one of these. I liked being able to have SA available to me. Couldn't find what I wanted in the timeframe I had, so ended up getting a Model 642-2 at a good price point.

I only got one recently and I really like it for what it is. I paid $450 plus another $35 to transfer it, and it didn't have correct stocks or a box and it sure isn't perfect. But it shoots dead on and is easy to carry.

It is a 49 no dash from June, 1965. I really splurged on the leather.

A good deal for sure. Probably the ugliest revolver I own, and probably the last one I would sell. When they are wheeling me around the nursing home, that thing will be in my pocket.

I thought the M49 was kinda ugly back in the day so I bought a M36. After awhile I saw the genius in the design and I bought the first M649 I ever saw and carried it as a backup weapon until I bought my M940. I now think the M49 is one of the best looking revolvers S&W has ever made.

Fair deal on a nice revolver, OP.

I always thought the humpbacks were ugly and never gave them a second look. I had a 337 and an M&P340 that I carried in my pocket for several years. Neither one were all that pleasant to shoot because of the light weight. I sold the M&P340 and found a high condition 649-2 in a local shop. I like it very much. I also just purchased a 432UC that may just be the best snubby of all time.
