In July I was fortunate enough to win a Model 27-2 with a 5" barrel at a local on-line auction. Details in the description were sketchy at best and didn't even specify the barrel length. I knew that it looked like a 5", but the more I looked at it, and thought about it, I was concerned that it might be a 6" - not that there is anything wrong with that, it's just that I already have one of those.
With that as a possibility, I threw a low-ball bid at it, and as fortune would have it, I won. When I picked it up, I asked if they had a ruler or tape measure - I was overjoyed when I found it to be a 5 incher.
This is a very plain 27-2 - from just before the time that Smith started "packaging" them with the 3 T's and a presentation case. This had a standard trigger, the semi-target hammer and walnut magna stocks. No red ramp or white outline - but it must have been someone's sock-drawer gun because it was pristine.
I had a set of smooth rosewood target stocks that I intended to install on it, but it turned out they were a poor fit. As a "place-holder" I installed a set of Roger's combat stocks until I figured out what I wanted to do with it.
Given the "Plain Jane" nature of the gun, even the originally intended smooth targets would have been overkill. What it needed were some fancier magnas and maybe a Tyler T-grip.
I don't remember how I found this maker, but I commissioned Henry Lance, at Texas Grips, to make me a set of Holly magnas with silver medallions. They came today. They are, in my opinion, absolutely gorgeous and just what this gun needed. Holly looks so much like ivory that you would be hard pressed to tell them apart. I installed them with a Tyler T-grip and the result is shown below.
Adios,
