Ooh there was a great 19-3. Great price for the condish as far as I can see. Someone got a deal..
Just a moment...

and this was a deal:
Just a moment...

And another:
Just a moment...

Unless I'm seeing prices like this at the gun show in July, I'll stick to GB.
29-2 8 3/8" and and 29-2 4" are both on my list but I'm not going over 12 Bens for the 8". Nor over 13 for the 4".
I've seen too many go for less than me pay more because it's there in front of me.

When evaluating GB sold prices, don't forget to include shipping, State Sales tax and dealer transfer charges, which can easily raise the cost $100 or more.

As for the 8-3/8" 29-2, the porting was not done by S&W as the ad claims. That was a proprietary process done by Mag-Na-Port in SE Michigan.

GB also charges a 1% buyers fee which isn't much BUT it's there.
Not being able to handle a potential purchase is also a downer, especially if/when you get a lemon and the buyer refuses to accept it back. Yes,,they can ignore your dissatisfaction and GB does NOT have the same buyer protection that places like Amazon and eBay have for purchases. Not even close. It's all swell till it goes bad.

Shipping fees are not all that
much against the price of the
gun. As for sales taxes, aren't
you supposed to pay them
wherever the purchase is made?

Yes, but for online sales they count "when the purchase is made" as when you check out on the site, or when you mail the payment to the seller. I don't know how the auction sites keep track of how much money goes to which state.

My takeaway is don't buy off GunBroker unless you can afford to lose 1/2 the price on a bad deal.

Years ago when I lived in Virginia, my FFL would call and say "XXX is here - wow what a beauty!" Until one day they just said "It's here." Um… how does it look? "You need to get down here." Its was an early 1970s Marlin 1894. The seller was a masterful photographer - every scratch, dent and blemish was artfully hidden in shadow or just between frames that appeared to show the whole rifle. I had talked to him before the sale and he seemed like a really nice guy. When I called from the FFL, he didn't really argue about the condition. We just haggled over how much he had to pay me back so I wouldn't return the rifle. I have another gun that looked absolutely perfect in the pics and when I picked it up. However, when cleaning the gun a few months after buying it the cold blue or whatever hiding a bare spot of metal just wiped right off.

Some auction houses can be really bad too. I bid on a "Colt Shooting Master with factory letter" and "won" a couple years ago. When I went to pick it up, I looked at the Colt letter and nearly lost it. It clearly said "New Service" not "Shooting Master" despite the barrel rollmark. I had seen the gun at the auction preview but didn't think to ask for the letter. Lesson learned. At least the auction house didn't make me take delivery and refunded my payment.

I think those are some good deals. As much as I would love to, being a busy family guy I just don't have the time to drive around searching gun stores. I have a few local ones I deal with but I definitely find some good deals on GB. My shooting range offers free transfers for members and no sales tax here in NH so shipping is the only cost for me. I've been buying online for many years and I feel I've always gotten a great/good/fair deal...YMMV.

I have bought several guns off GB and other auction sites, mostly with good to very good results. Only a couple of disappointments, but I knew I might be. Nothing is as good as gun shows, to me. I get to talk to the seller, maybe even know him, and actually see and handle the gun. Plus it's one on one. If I act civil and cordial, I usually get it for less than he's asking for it. If not, I can walk away. I might even still be able to change my mind and go back and try again. Where I live, between non-dealers, there are no hidden charges, or transfers, or taxes. (for now)

I quit buying off GB when they started collecting tax.
Before that I bought quite a few.
Only bought ones that I could talk
To seller on the phone. Met some
Nice people and some that I
Choose not to bid on their guns.
We're they Crooks, don't know
But they did not pass smell test.

I agree with Chad about not forgetting to add the extra fees, etc. I have generally found that when I purchase ANYTHING on GB I need to add 10% to my final winning bid price for the GB fees, sales tax, etc. When purchasing a "high end" item this IS a BIG deal...Roger

You are lucky it's only 10%. Last gun I bought on GB it was 10% sales tax plus 1% GB fee plus 3% Credit Card fee. Turned a good deal into a so so deal.

Around here, there is NO use to go to the local gun shops looking for a good deal on used guns. The EMPLOYEES of all the local gun shops, get the cream of the crop before the gun ever gets put on display. Left-overs, cheap hunting guns, and "farmer guns" are all that's left for the buying public. And then there are the vultures who stop in every other day and cleanup what the employees don't buy.

Gun Broker is more expensive, no doubt. I can usually find exactly what I want. And I pay more than everybody else thought it was worth. Plus, I'm not rooting thru someone else's leftovers. For the most part the Golden Days of gun buying are behind us. The good thing about paying a little too much for a gun is that all you have to do is hang on to it for a few years, and usually, it's a bargain. A few weeks after i pay too much on Gun Broker, I forget all about that extra $150 I spent on whatever Firearm Art that I bought.

I a few weeks ago, I bought off Gun Broker, a used, all COLT M4 for $720 cut and dried. It isn't exactly perfect, but it's pretty close. It has all the correct markings, and is about as close to a military M4 as a civilian is going to get. That was a bargain.

Friends don't let friends buy off Gunbroker!

It's available to anyone out there with internet access. Therefore, too many sets of eyes and no bargains.

It was bad enough before sales tax and now with sales tax it's worse. And not a level playing field as those residing in states without sales tax have an unfair advantage.

I sold a holster on Gunbroker once to see how it would go and all the fees not apparent at the time of listing made it hardly worthwhile.

In 30+ purchases over the years, I've never had anything but good to excellent results. I think it's because I am very careful to buy only from stores and very-long-time sellers with an A++ sales record to match.

I'm a big fan of GB myself. Makes it easy to find that one gun, in particular, that you would hardly ever be able to find locally. In the grand scheme, a few extra dollars for their fees is a deal for the convenience provided.
