I've been keeping an eye on M640's for a while. I see a lot of them (used) selling for under $500 and even a couple for under $400. One that I was watching was a 640-1 that ended up selling for way over $600 and almost $700 when you add in the shipping. This caught me by surprise. Seller didn't list anything special about the pistol. Why would a 640-1 get bid up so high? It's still less than a new one but a lot higher than any others I've seen.

I just noticed there is another thread concerning the 640-1. Nobody on that thread sees anything special about the -1 so I'm going to guess it was just a couple of guys bidding against each other.

Nice j-frame. 357 option for those that like to rattle the knuckles. Of course, 38s are a little easier, but being a j-frame snub, it's still snappy. Trijicon sight.

I picked this 640-1 up new a while back. Nice, but hard to justify the pricetag.

Lost this one in a divorce :(

Actually, I always delete out the .38's so all I look at are .357's. It does look like two guys really ran up the bidding. Odd since there were a few others listed and ending soon that were way below that price.

The 640-1 is one of my favorite J frames. The non "pro" model that is. I do not have a Pro Series 640-1. All of mine are from the late 90s and I have several. They are an excellent CCW J frame and I pretty much exclusively load with buffalo bore 148gr wadcutters and carry a 357 gold dot reload in my pocket. If you can find them under $500.00, get one or more. I've been lucky to find them anywhere between 300-550.

If that 640-1 is a 640PRO then that would explain the higher price. If not then probably a bidding war that benefited the seller.

The 640-2 is the one that tends to be hard to find and somewhat special.

They were made for NYPD personnel and were on the J Magnum frame but were chambered in .38 Special.

I have a 640PRO but very seldom carry it. I much prefer the "non magnum" Js because I pocket carry a lot.

I have an early production 640-1. What's special about them? They were the first pocket hammerless S&W's to be chambered in 357 Magnum, I think that makes them special. I used to shoot full power 357 in mine, but in the past few years I have stepped down to 38 Special +P for faster follow up shots.

The 640 is my favorite j frame. I had 640-1 that I carried until it broke. I sent back to the mothers hip and they replaced it with a -3. It came with the best trigger that I've ever felt in a j frame. I'm very happy with it.

I've been carrying a 640 for probably 10 years. I shoot them well. I change to another edc out of boredom occasionally, but I always seem to come back to it. I would like to pick a no dash at some point.

What broke on yours and was it related to ammo or just normal wear?

Thanks, I do the same but filter out the 357s

Just normal wear I guess. S&W didn't tell me what broke. The trigger locked up and I couldn't pull it. At that point, I didn't want to attempt to fix it myself. I was surprised when I received the letter telling me that the 640 couldn't be repaired. I asked what it was, but I never got a straight answer.

I had a 640-1 Pro for awhile. Up until my oldest daughter fell in love with it. She still lets me shoot it on occasion. Of all my J's, I shot it the best and most accurately.
