Love S&W, but carry Colt?

I've long felt a bit strange about this. Who else is in this boat?

I'm a huge S&W fan. My all-time favorite handgun is an old 4 screw K-38 6". And I've shot a ton of ammo through various Model 15s and 19s. I dote on my 6 1/2" pre-Model 24 in .44 Special.

But what is the no-joke, serious, daily carry, always within arm's reach, potentially life-saving handgun? Either an old Colt Detective Special or an early 1950s Colt Agent. The J-frames just don't do it for me when it comes to a shootable snub. So I love S&W for fun, but carry the Colts.

It's too bad Colt no longer makes the Detective Special, or the Colt Agent (old style). The size and configuration of the gems you mentioned have much better ergonomics. Don't own one, but have handled them at one time or another when visiting my LGS.

Nevertheless, I will always prefer the J-Frame because of its light weight, smaller size, and for my mode of carry. Firearms do not have to fit my hand perfectly in order to be effective or accurate. Understanding physics, proper shooting mechanics, and the art of the trigger pull is what it all boils down for myself.

I have several dozen Smith & Wessons, mostly revolvers but half a dozen semis. I Carry a Colt Pocketlite. I recently bought a Shield 2.0 with a built in laser. I may upgrade.

Most of the guns in my safe are S&W. I have a few Smith Semis, but mostly revolvers. I have 6 Colts, two 1911s, a 1903, and two Pocketlite 380s. I carry a Pocketlite.

I have a 3913 and thought about carrying it, and a recent Shield purchase might get some holster time.

Sometimes think about taking the Model 66 snub

I used to carry a Shield .45 until I finally found a successfully comfortable and secure holster for this Dan Wesson. The Shield is a fine firearm - I just shoot this one a whole lot better:

The ECO is a great carry piece. Been in my rotation for almost 10 years.

I love Colt, S&W, et al., and carry em all.

Colt 1911s and AR15 are the only Colt's are nice and > than S&W offerings. Other than that, I carry S&W revolvers and handguns over Colt. S&W are workhorse everyday commuters vehicle type of revolvers, and Colt revolvers are more like something you ride around with on the weekends and special occasions when you want to look pretty.

I think you have the equation backwards...

I preferred a Colt DS for everyday carry. It seemed to conceal better than almost anything else and for me, that ranked above other concerns. I have a 442, but the weight-vs.-recoil issue was not one I appreciated. It's nice to have a gun that I can shoot at the range without feeling as though my hand was being beaten up.

But now, I carry a 632UC. Wadcutters are about all I trust out of a really short barrel, I like having the sixth shot, the gun is light, (a half-pound lighter than the Colt) and it conceals better than the Colt.

I've been carrying a Colt a lot more at work in the last few years, either a Gov't Model or LW Commander. However even when I carry a Colt I still have my S&W 340 along as a back up.

I'd like to get a decent Cobra or Agent to use as a back up when I carry my K frame, but so far the ones I run across are either too much money or beat to death. I'll find one eventually, probably right after I retire.

I like both S&W and Colt, but daily carry is a KAHR PM40, kind of a disposable CCW pistol if you will. Very reliable and powerful as well. Hard to beat for CCW daily!

Im a small old guy in a low threat environment, i pocket carry but my Detective Special pulls my pants down so i opt for a 642.
"and dress for the rest"

IIRC the Colt DS could be loaded with a S&W K frame (Model 10) speed loader. That could make them a good back revolver. I'd defer to the old timers for confirmation.

I'm probably 50/30/10/10 - Colt, S&W, Sig, Beretta

Colts are either an old Cobra or a .32 or .380 Pocket Hammerless.

Smiths are either a J frame or a Shield .45 ACP.

Beretta is either a Model 81, 84, or 85, with a 950 for when I'm really lazy.

Sig is my P210 Carry.

Choice is based purely on a whim, though if I watch a Bogart movie on TCM a Model M will probably get the nod the next day.

I had to carry what the bosses said for 33 years. I bought a lot of guns with the idea of carrying them when I retired. I retired, and I carry them.

My Deadly Serious Gunfighter days are waaay behind me. I carry out of habit and superstition. If something does flare up, I'm not worried about forgetting how my gun works.
