That’s the problem with diamonds.
You are going on the sellers stated value.
If it were mine to do again, I’d look long and hard at lab created.
They are identical chemically, but too good to be natural. My understanding is that’s how to tell.

How much is your budget? There are real diamonds, lab created and zirconia. There's a big difference in the quality you will find at Walmart, the mall and Blue Nile.. and a big difference in price too,

A GIA appraised 1.75 carat VVS1, round, G color, excellent cut from Blue Nile will cost you at least $15K for the stone. The same lab created diamond not certified will cost you under $4k. Cubic zirconia maybe $1K or less.... and as long as you can keep a secret, no one will ever know the difference but you. Blue Nile will give you the opportunity to return the stone for a refund if not satisfied giving you time to get a second opinion.

Different Clients - Same Story

Never seen anyone so angry as the jilted girlfriend that came into the pawnshop to sell the ring the ex gave her and I had to tell her “That’s not gold and that’s not a diamond”.

When I worked at pawn shop, had similar experiences.

Customer: But, he said it was worth ....

Me: Did he ever lie to you about anything else?

Customer: .... quoting would get me dinged ....

With respect, I think being untruthful about this to one's intended would be a bad way to start what you surely hope becomes a lifelong relationship.

On the other hand, if it is a secret the two of you keep together, no harm, no foul.

(I don't know much about diamonds at all, but back in my day the difference between real diamonds and artificial diamonds was something jewelers, and pawnshops, could discern immediately, and a fair number of non professionals could do this as well.)

Not in any way knowledgeable on the topic, but from what I have read, the present “lab-grown” stones are fully the equal of mined stones. And if anything they are too perfect, but sell at around 1/3d the price per unit weight. Depends on the attitude of the intended recipient. My wife wouldn’t care what the stone was as she rarely wears her engagement ring anyway. Her original engagement ring was stolen in a home burglary. Replaced it somewhat later with a used Diamond from a local pawnshop that was both larger and higher grade than the original. And it cost much less than the original as it had some invisible chipping damage to a few facets. And she still rarely wears it, mainly it resides in her jewelry chest. The Diamond trade is based on myth and female psychology. Personally, I hate rings of any kind and have never owned a single one. It never bothered my wife that I didn’t want a wedding ring. I made that clear up front.

The lab grown diamonds are made of carbon under high pressure and heat just like nature makes diamonds. The difference is lab grown takes a couple months and nature takes thousands of years. Absolutely no human can tell the difference with the naked eye it takes optics to see that lab grown don't have the impurities that natural diamonds have. They are figuring out how to put impurities in lab grown diamonds but the don't know how to put in the impurity known as nitrogen. They will probably figure it out some day, but I have heard that currently 90 percent of all diamonds sold are lab grown.

Pffft! Go big or go home.

Diamonds are carefully limited and controlled by just a few people. They are released in very limited supplies to keep the price up. If they released as many as they have access to the price would go down to what a piece of quartz would cost. Even after the Russians got in the game they too are smart enough not to flood the market.
