For the first time in 14 years we had a rattlesnake up at the house. We don't usually get them around the house. We usually have chickens loose and my wife is sure they keep the snakes away. They can't leave anything alone. This was a big'un for here...an inch shy of 5 feet. 8 rattles...He was coiled up right in front of the front door. Cat wanted to go out so I opened the door... He backed up in a big hurry. I usually leave the rattlers alone out on the dry ground...but around the house is just not acceptable. He was on the porch so I couldn't use the little 410 so I used my pre18 with a CCI shot cartridge at about 4 feet. I was surprised just one did the trick. The magpies are already on the job

Also don’t have pythons, alligators, scorpions, hurricanes, and tornados.
Buy we do have snow and cold weather. I can live with that!

The CCI .22 shot in a 317 is plenty for rattlesnakes. I double tap just to be sure.

Our normal population is way down this year, not sure why. Drought? Disease? Who knows... ours are mostly green, Prairie Rattlers...

I was hunting in southern AZ in 1999. I was walking with my hunting partner trying to glass some cours deer. Walking through some wooded area, there was a fallen tree across the trail. Instead of stepping over the trunk, I hopped on top of it and heard a loud hiss. It was a Green Mohave rattler on the other side sunning itself. I was carrying a S&W 645 in a shoulder holster. I quickly took careful aim and let fly a 230 grain Win HP at that Mohave. Took his head right off and was nowhere to be found. My buddy had no idea what was going on when he heard the shot, but once he saw the rattler, he got the picture. Glad I didn’t just step over.

Alot of people think it is wrong to just kill rattlers; I don't kill 'em indiscriminately..Just don't want them around the house. Ours ere are also prairie rattlers. Not usually real large here. I had a friend up in Ingomar Montana (think the Jersey Lilly...look it up). He caught them and made some extra spending money getting 'em milked for venom. I don't like spiders and snakes but he caught some big ones. I considered him a crazy friend. RIP Lee

I've only seen one this year, but I haven't been out in the desert as much as I normally am. It was by the back door at work. I got the shovel out of my truck, scooped it up and set it free back in the open desert.

One person in particular at work wasn't very happy. Hanta virus is a real thing here. I made a judgement call.
