Racoons got my pet duck

We had raccoons trying to get in our chicken coop,,

I came up with what be pretty close to the ULTIMATE way to catch them,,

We have a wire dog box,, extremely large from when we owned a Great Dane dog,,

I put a roost hanging in the cage,, then put a chicken in the dog box,
each night the chicken sat safely on the roost. If the chicken had been off the roost, the raccoons KNOW how to scare a chicken, make it run to the other side of the coop, and ANOTHER raccoon is waiting there to grab the chicken.

Our first batch of chickens were pulled through the wire on their coop when we went away for three days,,
We came back to wings and feathers all over the coop wire,,

YOU GOTTA HAVE A ROOST!!

Well, Hav-A-Hart traps look almost identical to the construction of the dog box.
We put two Hav-A-Hart traps wired up against the dog box,,
The raccoons were convinced the Hav-A-Hart traps were the entrance to get the chicken.

I caught 23 raccoons in 21 days,, it eradicated the neighborhood.

I have to "RE-TRAP" the raccoons every two or three years.

The Hav-A-Hart traps work on groundhogs if you use apples or oranges as bait in the trap.

Oh, yea,, my wife always laughs at me,, because of the gun I take out to the trap when I catch a raccoon,,,,,,

Caje,Are you looking for justice or simply revenge?

Never seen a raccoon during daylight hours. Currently have one in my backyard. It usually makes an appearance between 2:30am and 4am.

I've shot at it with an air rifle a couple of times with no damage. I recently bought a Umarex CO2 pistol that can fire 18 bb's full auto. Now if I can only get the door open fast enough.

Spray and pray is my answer.

P.S. Whatever your plan is do it on the downlow. Neighbors had skunks in their yard and called Wildlife for help. Their way of removing unwanted pests while being legal is not very satisfying to those of us that believe in the death penalty. :)

My dad once took 38 raccoons out a lady's yard with live traps because she wanted them relocated somewhere else, not killed.

If you think he made 38 trips to find habitat suitable for them, you're crazy. What happens after the truck drives off isn't always for public consumption.

Recurve or wheelbow with just a quiet twang.
No tax stamp necessary.
Almost movie theater quiet, as they say in Brooklyn.
They make little crossbows that also shoot 6mm steel balls.
Never tried one but it might work.

Not sure about the quality of the one above, but I've read about good little crossbow pistols that can be scoped or a red dot mounted.
I have a Hoyt Pro Hunter wheelbow and made a mount for an old Leupold M8-2x. Also #60 but a straight riser and camo.
I like the old finger style wheelbows. ATA about 48".

A friend owns a welding business,, he was asked to build a "transport box" by a "relocater".

The box had to look like it was a safe, humane transport cage sitting in the back of a pickup.

Actually, the box was connected to a CO2 fire extinguisher.

The CO2 took care of the safely trapped, and caged animal.

He became popular with animal trappers,, they found the box worked very good.

The animals were "relocated" ,,, to dirt naps.

I'm sorry to hear about your duck Caje. I frikkin hate trash pandas. They are diseased vermin.

I've tried .22 shotshells and CB caps, neither worked. All they did was spook the little buggers.

Crossbow is a thought. Or if a neighbor has some hunting hounds...personally I like .410 shotshells, but again the neighbors would be an issue.

EDIT: rumor has it that a person could tape a pop bottle over the end of a .22 barrel. Rumor has it that it quiets things down.

That's the rumor anyways....no personal experience when I was younger.

Yeah, sure.;):D:cool:

I feel like the raccoons are territorial,,
they "think" the other clan has the location,, so they do not move in,, for a while.

Then,, bam, we are over-run again.

I think they "learn" traps also,,
when the Hav-A-Hart stops working, the Dukes trap comes out.

I do not use the Dukes very often,, They hang in the shed,, until the big guns are needed.

They even learn the Dukes,,

Sorry about Quackers , I wish you success in your vendetta
I hope you reconsider the poison idea
I also have personal experience with cb caps from a bolt rifle
Shot one in my basement with my son outside listening , he said he could hear it but it wasn’t loud
When I shoot them outside the sound of the bullet striking is louder than the shot

Been fighting this problem for 10-12 years. They love turkey eggs but I love turkey hunting, so something had to give.
Best solution I have found is Hav-a-heart traps with a honey bun or pecan twirl in the center of the area past the trip plate. Then push a 3/16 steel rod down thru the trap and honey bun to keep it centered and keep him from rolling the trap after he gets caught. CCI quiet thru center of the head doesn’t make much noise.

I bought a Ten Point crossbow with my credit card points from Cabelas and it came with a 3X scope and has a great trigger and is just like shooting a rifle out to 40 yards. The bolts drop fast but if you know the range and can use lower cross hairs properly you could get easy hits out to 75 yards. But one of the best shooting investments I ever made was getting a Spectre II .22 suppressor. I have a Ruger 10/22 camo, take-down rifle and Ruger 22/45 pistol with 4" barrel and Bushnell red dot sight and they will both take the can and are a hoot to shoot. My wife loves shooting them and so does everyone else and I go through a brick of CCI standard velocity pretty quickly. We got the yard of month award one summer and a few days later it looked like an artillery range because of one stinking armadillo. Later I saw him at night and he took off running and I aimed the red dot from the pistol and got three hits and that ended his digging fun.

I think you've known me long enough to know the answer to that question...;) I painted a black hand on the Pecan tree in which they are living though.....
