I live in SW Florida and as most of you know we are scheduled to get another sock in the nose from Hurricane Milton mid week. I always keep prepared so I did not have to go out and fight supermarket or Home Depot lines. We need to take a local trip tomorrow morning and I wanted to top off my wife's tank (mine's already filled). So I venture off to our local Costco and the line for the gas station had to be at least (with no exaggeration) 2 1/2 - 3 hours long, maybe even longer. No way I was waiting on a line like that for 7-8 gallons of gas! I get out of the parking lot as fast as I was able to and headed down the road 1/4 mile to a WAWA gas station with no line at all. Yes, I spent an extra .28 cents a gallon and was in and out in 3 minutes.

The point here is I could not understand how people are willing to wait in line for 2 1/2 - 3 hours, probably burn more gasoline waiting in line than they will save over another gas station even at a higher price and given the fact that we are all preparing for the imminent storm, they had nothing better to do except wait and yak on their phones. WOW - I said to myself, just how dumb are these people!!! Now I have seen it all - until I venture out next time that is.....

I have a family member who uses GasBuddy in search of the cheapest gas.
She will drive 10 miles off her chosen route, just to save .01 on a gallon of gas.

As you said, I refuse to wait in line at Costco or Sams to get gas for a few cents cheaper. Heck some stations are priced about the same.
Like all the idiots buying all the bottled water.I have a 10 gal Igloo water (gator aid)cooler. I fill up from the tap water.

After Ian, the line for our local Wawa, which is about 3/4 mile away was several hours long. They would block the intersections because everyone trying to just go straight across the intersection was a potential line jumper. And Ian wasn’t as bad as Charley in some ways. We had the National Guard in town and were under martial law for weeks and 23 days without power with Charley. I’m preparing for this one to be worse than either, but hoping for the best.

I have friends who laugh at my habit of never letting my tank get below 3/4 full when at home. They stop laughing when things like this happen...

I can ALWAYS get in my car and make 300 miles, minimum.

They have the "small engine fuel" (gas without alcohol). The 2 local ones are already unapproachable. Good fortune to all. Joe

I fill my Igloo and put it on the kitchen counter . A bag of ice costs a couple of bucks . I keep a couple of bags out in the freezer anyway . No reason to stock up on bottled stuff .

We had the gas lines here after Helene and the folks in SE Georgia were without power for a week. I drove the 10 miles across the state line today to fill my tank and took advantage of the state gas tax being suspended in Georgia. Saved 60 cents a gallon.

I drove the 10 miles across the state line today to fill my tank and took advantage of the state gas tax being suspended in Georgia. Saved 60 cents a gallon.

Running extension cords to everyone across the street, back when the road was dirt, helped me feel like I was helping. Friends losing their fish from no electricity for the aquariums, and no ice to put off oxygen and cool the water, people losing one or two freezers full of frozen meats and veggies, trying to get an oak tree off your house and keep the holes covered, no showers, and the list of the LITTLE things go on and on. Days turn into weeks. Hugo was coming over us, but turned north a little last minute.
Life gives us all kinds of opportunities; and death will kill, steal, and destroy it all in but a moment no matter where you are. Live well while you can.

I live within about two or three minutes from a cluster of seven gas stations and usually re-fill both vehicles when their tanks get about half empty. Also keep a five gallon tank of gas in the shed for the lawn mower and “just in case.” I will fill up at Sam’s Club and save a dime per gallon, but only if I am going to Sam’s to buy other things.

People lack common sense. Plain and simple.
I'll drive an extra 10 miles (5 miles each way) to fill up in Idaho, IF I can save $0.50 per gallon and I'm buying 10 gallons or more. Saving $5 on a fill up is worth burning an extra half gallon of gas (which costs $1.75).
But wasting 2 hours and using a gallon of gas ($3.50) to save $2.50 on a fill up makes no sense.

A guy I knew years ago was like that. On vacation one time, he and his wife pulled into a gas station when he noticed that the station across the street was a penny or two cheaper. He pulled back out on the road to go there and collided with another car...

The main point was that this is not a normal time in that we have one of the worst hurricanes in modern history headed right down our throats and people are wasting valuable time (3-4 hours) to save a couple of bucks ($2 - $3)when there is so much prep work to be done. Insane!
