talk me out of this one

The only downside to me is its not pinned. It wouldn't matter to most folks, but it would bug me. Just a little.

I'd offer $400 out the door see if they nibble.
The 15-5 was the revision when they changed to the wide rib barrel .
On a side note the 17-5 and early 17-6 were available with the same barrel profile in the same length if you're looking for a partner gun in .22lr.

From the cylinder turn ring and the blue loss on the barrel, it has been carried a good bit, as well as shot plenty. Cylinder notches don't appear dished; good thing. Grips are the rounded undercover typed. Can't be positive from the image, but it could be a .312 smooth trigger.

All in all, if it passes all the function and fit tests, it would be a good one to put to work shooting for you. I'd try to pay a bit less, if it were me, but the price isn't way out of line.

FWIW (not much) I got my M15-5 at a local auction around 10 years ago for $215.
BUT it had mechanical issues and needed some repair.
So, if this one is mechanically sound, for $420, it sounds like a good buy to me in today's market.
JMO and YMMV....

$420 is not an outlandish price these days. Unless a firearm is grossly under-priced, I will always attempt negotiation. I'd offer $350 with hopes of getting it for $400 including taxes.

I wouldn't have a problem shelling out $420, but if you can get it for 420 OTD, I would try that first. The couple/few stores I've been known to buy from around here usually either drop the background check or maybe charge $5 if you buy it from them. Sales tax here in PA is 7%, bringing it up to $450, then add whatever the background check is, if any. Personally, I would have to ponder that for a day or so; but, the gun looks like a nice revolver. If you're in the market for a revolver, I don't think you can go wrong. (I'll spend someone else's money!) That price doesn't look out of line. I'm no dealer, but I'd have a go at it. Good luck with your decision, but it'll last you a lifetime.

For $400 OTD, if I were in the market for a good, clean shooter Model 15, especially with that heavy barrel, it would be going home with me. Not many quality Smiths for that price these days. Good luck.
