Looking at M29's and pre M29's on the Net and I find the stocks on these guns a bit confusing.
Book says Goncalo Alves, but all I am seeing is Walnut. What's the deal here? Thanks, Big Larry

I think cokes are mostly, maybe all, Goncalo Alves; there's a lot of variation in grain and color though. At least that's what I remember from posts from folks who know. Some earlier non-relieved checkered N targets were perhaps walnut and some rosewood, especially smooth ones.

Real Cokes (S&W called them Special Oversized Target Stocks) were made of Goncalo Alves or possible rosewood.

Walnut diamond target stocks on the nickel 27, Cokes on the blued 29-2.

You could be looking at walnut target stocks or goncalo "cokes" that are on the brown side. In the attached pic you will see a coke panel on the left that looks alot like walnut, in the center colorful goncalo targets and on the right a more traditional looking goncalo coke panel.

Why call them " Cokes " or " Coke Bottle " when they look nothing like a coke bottle ? If they were made of Cocobolo then "Cokes" makes some sense but not "Coke Bottle". I never have seen the bottle shape that is mentioned.

Type/species of wood a product is made of is nearly impossible to identify correctly from photographs, just possible type or species.

"Why call them " Cokes " or " Coke Bottle " when they look nothing like a coke bottle ?"

Because they have a palm swell on both sided which, when viewed from behind somewhat resembles the bulged center of a glass Coca Cola bottle.

Here's an example

Its for that reason that I always understood "Coke" bottle stocks to refer to the shape of the Coca Cola bottle from behind. I had the Culinas pronounce that swell on a pair of custom stocks I had made and it truly makes all the difference in the world for the right feel, a palm swelling fit...just right for me.

Because a lot of people confuses Target stocks with Coke bottle stocks. They think that only two stock style exist: Magnas and Targets (small vs big ).

Cokes are another animal

I have never seen a pair of coke bottle stocks made of American walnut. One or two pairs in rosewood, the rest in Goncalo alves which varies greatly in grain and color. The pair of coke bottle stocks shown below and dating to February 1956 might be mistaken for walnut as the panels are quite plain. Click on the photo for a better look.

I'm still on the hunt for proper recipients for these...Unfortunately, every time I find a candidate, its caretaker suggests I give up the lumber and let him continue as caretaker...Not what I had in mind at all......Ben

Ben, I think I have a candidate for one of those. Just trying to help you out.

Truckman, Ben, those appear to be some GEM Cokes! I wouldn’t let them leave my collection either!

They won't pass for new, Larry, but they are far nicer than some I've seen...Strangely enough they came to me on separately bought guns that weren't even remotely appropriate...I spent time and money locating the correct stocks for each gun, but I'll patiently await the right orphan to show up at my door needing some correctly fitting shoes......Ben
