S&W 4566TSW West Virginia State Police & Public Service Commission Pistol Information

Roy confirmed WVSP UCK5824 shipped April 2011 which matches all info on this 4566TSW except the initial response I got from SW that said manufactured April 14, 2015. Now SW can not find any info on mfg date (???) or they dont want to acknowledge what is apparently a mistake typing 15 vs 11 or maybe an incorrect 15 entry on a card instead of 11. So I would say disregard any info regarding my initial entry that the pistol was manufactured 4/14/2015. Sorry for any confusion.

I am the proud owner of the uck7166.
This quickly became my favorite pistol. Made a holster for it and making my way through my second case of 500 rounds with it. Absolute dreamboat of a 45 to shoot.. even getting comfortable enough to draw and shoot from hip with it…and now your saying there is only 83 made! Oof!! I should have bought 2!!!!!! Great post!!!

I was able to get my hands on UCK7575 at the beginning of the month and it is a BEUTIFUL pistol! It came with Original Box, Papers and the Fired Casing and the two magazines. The OEM Grips had a few scuff marks but I replaced them with Hogue Rubber Grips and I have a Set of Cocobolo Checkered Grips inbound. I have already replaced the Recoil and Mainsprings with Wolff Springs. The New Trijicon Night Sights came in today and I will install them tomorrow.

I was able to pick a Fresno SO 4566 TSW for $570, which I thought was a steal. Great gun to accompany my CHP 4006. I couldn't help but sliding on a 4513 TSW slide on to it. Looks pretty good and functions good as well even though I like the regular slide a little better.
Awesome 3rd Gen with history to boot.

Sorry to hi-jack. Great write up!

skjos,

I can't remember the dates or year but I think it was around 2000 or so. I was the LE regional manager for the western region and worked closely with Sgt J. Sparks at Fresno County. Sgt Sparks was a die hard S&W guy and we became friends. At that time they were still buying 4506s to replace aging 645s but were looking at 4566 TSW's. I retired before they purchased the 4566's and the new guy later closed the deal. I ended up buying one of the Fresno Test & Eval 4566 TSW that was on my sample account. Pistol was not shot very much and still looks brand new. Unfortunately there was no papers or box. Those things often disappeared and on occasion, "one of" type guns were sometimes sent to the reps in plain cardboard boxes. This was the early days of the TSW series guns. That pistol still shoots one hole groups with good ammo and only has one slot on the light mount, which is part of the forging and not one of the riveted on light rails like some very early guns. The TSW guns were all great shooting pistols and built to last. You just didn't want to fall out of a boat with one in your holster. They were a bit heavy.

Great thread! I'll get some info on mine up next week, but here's mine.

Other Gen 3 LEO guns

Is there a thread for the other LEO S&W models? Could they be added here? Heres some of my information. I have a WVSP 2004 commertive. WVSP black Melonite. WVPSC in black Melonite.. New Hampshire Commertive. Kentucky State Police. CHP. NYPD. WV Conservation Officer commertive.

4566TSW to add to the list, it's one of the odd balls!

Good evening S&W Forum! I recently acquired what I believe (based on this thread) is another one of the prototypes. I saw in the OP that he had serial #'s BDX5268 and BDX5270. Well, here is BDX5269. As you can see in the pictures, it does not have a melonite finish, nor does it have the Fresno engraving. It is DA/SA, the safety is not spring loaded. It also has the serial number engraved on the frame under the grip. I have a few 3rd Gens and I have never seen that before. The kicker (pun intended) is that I got it on the great auction site, on Super Bowl Sunday, for $600. How did I do? Also any information or questions are greatly appreciated. I would love to know more about the origin and I will do the best I can to answer questions/provide specific picture requests.

I just got on the forum on my phone and realized there are a lot of pictures in the OP that for some reason never appeared on my computer. I think it's interesting that my gun (BDX5269) has a bobbed hammer when BDX5268 and BDX5270 have a spurred hammer.

Glad it went to a good home! I'm at fault for costing you a bit extra on this one, but I had just picked up a different 4566TSW before this one was posted so I was timid with my bidding.

I was born and raised in WV so these are naturally some of my favorites!

Historical Foundation reply.

Good evening gents. Great day today as the historical foundation has returned my email about my 4566TSW. Please see below!

"You've got an interesting pistol there. While I'm not sure I'm going to be able to give you a good answer on the hammer, here's what I can tell you.

The gun first shows up in the books on January 4, 2007. While it's noted as an "acquisition," this is generally when the gun was serialized. Even if the gun isn't finished final assembly yet, the ATF still requires that it be logged in the books as a firearm (and since it's an "acquisition and disposition" book, it has to get logged as an "acquisition").

It then went on January 8, 2007 to the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, FL. I don't know what show was happening there at the time, but this was one of the pistols displayed at Smith & Wesson's booth there.

It then went to Deputy Charles A**** at the Honolulu International Airport. I don't know what agency he was with, but the gun was clearly being used in some capacity as a duty weapon.

I then show the gun coming back to S&W on September 19, 2011. There's nothing in the notes about why it came back, unfortunately.

I then show the gun coming back to S&W *again* on March 5, 2012. It was shipped back by a Dan K**** from Alcoa, TN. Again, no notes about why, but I do see S&W logging in the gun as a "used gun" on May 3, 2012. I can't imagine it having been returned under warranty, as it was a five year old gun at this point.

Lastly, I show the gun as having gone to Lew Horton Distribution in Westborough, MA on June 1, 2012.

There's a near certainty that the gun was worked on by Smith & Wesson during this time—and perhaps multiple times. My guess is that the hammer work was done on one of these trips back to the factory.

Sorry that I can't give you a better answer than this, but hopefully this information provides some color about this interesting pistol."

skjos,

I'm am coming out of the woodwork here to give you a huge shout out for all of the information you have been able to acquire and provide in your post regarding these unique pistols.

I was fortunate to be able to acquire two copies that were part of the WVPSC order. While I would have loved one of the WVSP marked copies, I do treasure them and the extensive information goes a long way to help explain them to others. Now if I could come up with one of the Fresno County versions :-)

Thanks again!

@Frenchy1004, I have a WVSP 4566TSW and I'd rather have a non-agency marked WVPSC one instead.

Why?
It would seem most of us would prefer the WVSP marked pistol in similar condition.
Granted less of the WVPSC pistols and probably fired less, and probably less carry wear, but the logo on the side is better than having to research and explain what the WVPSC is.
Do I hear a trade coming?

I don't collect agency marked guns as a hobby and I never served as a cop in WV.

So, if someone wants a WVSP marked gun, I'm down for a trade.

I like the gun because it is a melonite TSW with an integrated rail.
