Dirty Harry Question

As much as I love the 29s used in the Dirty Harry movies what I REALLY love is the sound of the blanks used in Harry's gun. There were a couple of John Wayne movies where the blanks sounded the same (Cahill, US Marshal) but the Dirty Harry series was "it" for me.

No lie it does have its own cool unique sound

Post high school I worked in a gun store. We had a customer that was doing what you propose and actually shot his TV with a live round. But it was a Walther PPKs, and it was a James Bond movie. Why he confessed such stupidity is beyond me. Don't be that guy.

Yes, watch them all in order.

If it’s ok for Elvis, it’s ok for anyone.
Elvis shot his TV set every time Robert Goulet came on.

Those sounds are dubbed into the film and not the actual sound of the blank. Siren sounds are also added to most films and TV shows.

Another vote for watching them in order.

And, when you get to the third movie wait for the first scene were Tyne Daily appears in plain clothes. Then hand you wife the gift wrapped Colt Diamondback you have purchased for her. Leave the box of Remington FBI loads under the tree until Christmas. Then have fun saying "marvelous" and "don't concern yourself" until the new year.

Most people will not confess to shooting their TV, Makes me think it happens WAY more than one ever hears about.
I had a friend that paid his way through college working as a TV repairman in Texas. He said it happened all the time.

I bet a lot of door knobs and light fixtures get taken out that way too.

A few years ago my Daughter gave me the Boxed set of Dirty Harry movies
for Christmas ... it came with a his badge in a badge case ...
No 44 Magnum ...
just the Badge ... I don't know if our CD player still works ...
I guess CD's are now obsolete technology ... I still have a box of Casset Tapes and 8-Track Tapes ... Talk about obsolete !!!

My DVD player broke down years ago and we just updated my little den. We got a new HD TV and since I still have a ton of DVDs but no player I looked into them. We got a thin little new player (about 10”X8”X2”) about $40 and it’s great. Why let all those movies go to waste.

I once read in a firearm publication that due to low supply of Model 29s, the gun used in "Dirty Harry" actually was a Model 57. With the only difference being nineteen thousands of an inch in bore diameter, no one could tell.

The rumor that Dirty Harry's Model 29 was actually a Mod. 57 has been circulating for a long time, along with the rumor that it was actually a Mod. 25. John Milius, principal writer for the Dirty Harry screenplays, claims that it (the 6-1/2" version, that is) really was a Mod. 29 and he now owns it - currently on loan to the NRA Firearms Museum. However, I've also seen posts that claim Milius's story is BS and that Clint himself owns the 6-1/2" Mod. 29. There apparently was also a 8-3/8" Mod. 29 that was used in some still shots but not actually in the movie(s) - nobody seems to know or care particularly where that one ended up. I guess the truth is floating around out there somewhere, but who knows if we'll ever find it.

I always heard that the Dirty Harry movies caused the shortage of 29s.

Before that they were like the X-frame revolvers are now, a niche item that might not be available in every gun store due to low demand.

It had a lot to do with it. Also the way S&W sold guns to dealers.

To get a high in demand gun the dealer had to sell a bunch of "Plainer Jane's" to get a premium. Then they did not know what they were getting till the shipment arrived.

Dealers had lists and also many were sold at a $100 or more over MSRP. I was a good customer at one shop, bought plenty of items and was responsible for other people using that dealer.

A Model 29 came in in the morning delivery I was there and said I will take it. I was sort of joking as I was down to #4 on the list. Started at 9 and 10 months later I was a 4!

The dealer himed and hawed a bit and said OK tell no one of this and he sold me the gun at MSRP. Under the circumstances of the time I did damned good.
Also as a very good customer I got a 18, 36 and a few months later another 29.

This was the early to mid 1970s era! The dealer is long dead so I'm not violating our deal!

A friend of my Dads who was on the Navy shooting team, retired and bought a gun shop. He knew my Dad real well and knew I was his Son. Long story short, he got me a blue 4" and a nickel 6 1/2", and charged me full retail. He also got my BIL a very hard to find 6" M19. He gave him a discount as my BIL was a SDPD police officer. Big Larry

He fired 5, not 6!

Of course, did he really know that or not.

The last home video re-issue added a 6th shot sound effect to satisfy the stupid people. Even Milius gave up trying to explain that lowering the cocked hammer and then cocking again will bring up the empty chamber.

His thumb never goes back to the hammer

You're right, even the footsteps, match strikes, just about everything is dubbed in--I forgot that includes "gunfire." Still, the sound of Harry's .44 going off is still one of the coolest sound effects for the genre.

That’s how I got my M29-2 (blued, 6-1/2” bbl) back in ‘77. It showed up at the LGS and the manager called me. I was in college at the time so he allowed me to put it on layaway ($289.50 + sales tax). I still have it too.

For anyone who likes the m29 that intro in magnum force is awesome ..and like you said plus the Pythons ,,,I wonder how much the Python sales went up after Magnum Force .
Watched a y@utube video yesterday a guy was reviewing a new
model 29 and he loved it but acted like the trigger on a Colt handgun was on a whole different level ...I don't know the only Colts i own is a 1911 and AR15

I'm probably an oddball here, but I've only seen two of the Dirty Harry movies. The original and Magnum Force. Of the two I think Magnum Force was the better movie.

I've owned several Model 29's over the years. They'd come and go in trades. BUT those Colt Pythons in Magnum force got my attention. Just beautiful revolvers. It took me a long time to finally get one. Colt even stopped making them for 20 years? and bought them back again, but I must have been near the front of the line when they did. I've got three of them now, all with the 4" (.2) barrels, two stainless and one blue. I shoot the snot out of the blue one especially and I just love that gun. I tell my wife I feel like David Soul when I'm holding it. She assures me I don't look like him.

I was calling the movies CD's ... But they aren't ...
Totally Forgot Movies are called DVD's ... thanks for getting me straight ... and Thanks for heads up on a new DVD Player ...
Our TV is hooked up to a black box that looks like a DVD player...
If it doesn't work ... I'm getting a new one ... I got way to many classic movies on DVD's ... Not To Get One !

Thanks for the info ... it helped a lot !
