what year of production would a model 19 4" with a partial serial number beginning with VHB
be? i saw such a gun on consignment and wasn't able to decipher the entire serial number due to not having my reading glasses and not being able to remove the grips. the gun was a no lock and it was equipped with a combat trigger and no box. the partial serial no. was given to me by the clerk.

thanks,

ed

Hi ed, I wonder about the VHB given by the clerk. SCSW4 does not show VHB for a revolver. It DOES list a VHN for 1998 but that refers solely to semi-auto pistols, which doesn't help us. Other members are VERY down with serial #s and will appear here when they wake up (2:28AM here).

Best I can do. Be safe, partner. Check 6.

P.S. The serial # is on the butt of the frame and you say the clerk did not remove the grip.

Would the shop allow you to open the cylinder and see which model and dash no. of that Model 19 (19, 19-1, etc.)? If it's a newer 19, the s/n should be in the yoke area, too. You should give them a call and get some additional info if you're really interested in that revolver.

2015 is the latest that 4th Ed. SCSW has SN prefixes for revolvers, and the prefix was only up to CZX. For a model to have a prefix starting with V it would have to be almost new, if it is possible at all. Even semiauto pistols are only up to UCF by 2014. Ten years' time may make some later letter combinations in the alphabet though. If the LGS guy has the original box, the manufacture date is on it. This must be one of the Classic Series M19's.
