What would be a fair price ( buyer/seller) for what is in my opinion a shooter grade ( no box, pachmayr grips, some holster wear , mechanicaly excellent ) 2.5 inch model 66-2 ?

See em with regularity here, but in the $800 - $1000 range - more for earlier P&R and or box. However, good deals can be found if you look for them. Found this pristine example a few weeks ago at the Vegas Bass Pro. Also came with a nice leather rug. $586 OTD after vet discount and points. Truly an anomaly in the 2.5" 66 world.

This is the exact model and barrel length that I have wanted for some time. The bad part is I have had two chances to trade into one reasonably but in each case there was something else at the gunshow that I felt I wanted more and could only afford one purchase. The closest that I have been able to come was buying my 64-2 several years back. It had some small mars on it but it had hardly been shot and was a very tight specimen that passed all of the normal concerns for a used double action Smith & Wesson revolver. Still would like to own a 66 in that barrel length.

These days, yep, around $800, maybe more depending upon where you live. Revolvers with barrels shorter than 4 inches became super popular during and shortly after the pandemic, now inflation has kept the prices high.

I am stuck at early pre covid prices ......I know I KNOW times have changed but to me $750/$800 would be tops in my book. Like others have said it finding one that the real hunt , 7 yrs ago I found a 99% clean model 19 2.5" with box and goodies for $500 I thought that was a good deal then??

About 650-750 here. I purchased a 19-3 in 95% for $750 about a year ago with pachs. I later replaced with elk stag grips (which was $125). The one on the left in the attached pic.

M66 is great, BTW - M19/66 are the most practical S&Ws out there - pack the 357 in the smallest frame that shoots them well.

Sadly here in Texas I am not seeing 'vintage' S&Ws at pawnshops any more... except I saw one, a M&P 2 inch square butt .38 (rounded front sight looks like 1950s-1960s make) blue for $600 last week. It was in pretty decent shape but I really don't need another snub .38 that I would never carry.

Just none of 'em! And a 2.5 inch M66??? Nope. I was lucky a few weeks ago I snagged a Marlin Texas 18.5 inch 30-30 made in 82. Took off the Leopold 2-7 scope and I am now putting on a Lyman aperture sight.

But 99.8% of what I see is AR-15s, polymer semi-autos, and junk single shot pistols. Bummer.

I bought my 2.5" Model 66, when we transitioned to Sig 226's.
Paid $75.00 for it and my 4" 66 as well.
Sold it for $75.00 and regretted it, so I found another one That I paid $600.00 for. This one is not going anywhere.

I gotta ask, are those grips on the last revolver tulipwood? It's my favorite wood grips.

I had a beautiful condition 2.5"66-2 that I sold years ago when I located a NIB 3" 66-2. I like the slightly longer tube with the longer ejector rod. I haven't seen any for sale around here for a long time at any price.
