In most cases I suspect it's not that one absolutely needs that Gunbroker gun but want it. And with want, learn to bear whatever costs that exist.

Sure am happy that I have a C&R FFL, $30 for 3 years. Most auction companies and online dealers offer direct shipment to me when I present my license and I simply do not bid on guns where my C&R FFL is not honored. I can also sell and ship guns I own using the license, plus have never been refused by any receiving FFL. Seems to me any collector who buys a handful of C&R guns a year should have a C&R FFL. It is legal to purchase up to most pre-model S&Ws since they qualify for a C&R FFL up to 1955.

Just a for what it's worth observation...which I know is worth nothing. For every thread lamenting .gov's abuse of FFL's, how hard they have it, the paper work, the risk, etc...etc...there is a thread lamenting what an FFL charges for transfers.

Places that I've checked around the Tampa area are mostly around $35-$50. Then there's Rural King, in Zephyrhills, where they say they will do an FFL transfer for free. Haven't had occasion to use this service, though, since I found out about it.

In my part of central Texas fees range from $25.00 to $50.00 for a transfer.

There is one shop that charges $35.00 without a LTC, $25.00 with. I've been told of another shop maybe 40 minutes away that does the same, but I haven't been there to confirm. A friend has used them for several years and speak highly of them.

Got an eye opener yesterday, bought a gun off of Gun Broker which I haven't done in quite some time. Went to the local shop to see about getting the gun shipped there and put in my name, they now want $50.00 to do the transfer. $50 to transfer a $250 gun. Looked around and finally found a shop that will do it for $25 which was the most of what I expected to pay. Its a shame that now with the cost of shipping and transfer fees you have to add close to $100 to the price of what you though was a good deal. This is definitely going to have an effect on my future firearm buys off of the internet.

I have been paying $40-$50 for over 15 years.
It takes 15-20 minutes for a paid employee to handle it roughly here in Pa .
Employee gets paid,
Employer has to pay some hidden employee costs on top of that.
State gets a fee
Store has to make some money as they make nothing off the gun.

Years ago many shops were owner run and present. The owner would be fine if not really busy to do that for you. Really did not affect him money wise.

I am ok paying $40.00 as it helps keep the shop open.

I charge $20. Most of my customers have a permit so it is quick & easy. Besides that I get to see some cool guns. Most others in the area charge $25 or $30.

Starts at $25 around here, some higher. I think a couple might be at $50. It the giant scheme of things, not a big deal. But as others have mentioned you need to factor that in to the GB price. Shipping is the big one anymore.

There's $15 transfer fee, cash, - the cheapest in the area - but they don't accept transfers from individuals.

Since the 7 day waiting period came into effect, they started charging an extra $10 for storage. They waive the $10 fee, cash and carry, if you have a CC permit.

Pawnshops are usually the cheapest for transfers.

In my area brick and motor stores give you the stink eye if you ask them to receive and transfer a new gun. They obviously want you to buy it from them. A home based guy has to charge for his time. He has to be available 3 different times to complete transaction on a handgun. 1 take delivery. 2 buyer does paperwork and background check. 3 buyer picks up gun after going to pistol permit dept to add it to his permit. Also the background checks no go through NY who naturally charges the FFL $9 for something that used to be free. Long guns skip step 3. Ammo is like long gun. Only background check for ammo is $2.50…….. all this assumes background checks response is “proceed”. Often the response is “delayed”. This requires FFL to avail himself again when it does go through. Makes you wonder why anyone want to be an FFL in NY

I have a nice little Hardware store that still charges $20.
She does everything Electronic if i but one on a Forum i just include her on a Email and calls me when it is in to pick it up.

I wish transfer fees were $50.
Here in California my lgs is $85. Plus you’re paying an 11% tax on guns even when bought out of state like on gunbroker. The only way to get around the 11% tax is to do a ppt. Also you must pay $37 DROS fee aswell. Because of all these taxes and extra fees I can not bid competitively on online auctions for guns especially lower priced guns.

I would live elsewhere if I could but a huge portion of jobs in my field are located in California so I don’t really have much of a choice.

I guess my goto guy does it because he must be making enough money as a side business. Of course, with inflation that's why he raised the price to $75.

Also, he won't do a transfer for a new gun. He has a catalog issued by his distributor and it covers most everything on the market today. Then, the $75 fee is waived.

Personally, I have never been delayed. But then again I don't have a common name. This new ammo NICS check is a joke. I was at Cabelas the other day and a guy got "delayed. I believe his name was Jones. I imagine there are bazillion criminals names Jones. When he took his coat off and revealed he was a local police officer everyone there laughed.

I'm sticking to C&Rs. My FFL will cover that, no problem.

When the only guy left in town charges 75, you will either pay it or go without. Its an easy choice.

This is the key.

Everytime you buy something on line or from the big box store that you could have bought from the LGS you are just helping edge them closer to closing.

Support your LGS or don’t complain when they close. In my area, four Mom and Pop gun stores closed this past year. I believe there is now only one gunshop in Mentor and one in Geneva. It is too bad, they had a lot of interesting things besides the plastic stuff.

In WA State

I am in WA state in the top liberal and anti-gun King County and now I am paying for a handgun transfer at one of the best FFLs in this area $35 for the actual transfer plus $18 for the WA State Patrol mandated background check, total $53. Used to pay $25 for NICS few years back and heard then of FFLs around here doing them at $10 or even for free. Most if not all those FFLs are now gone.

NICS used to be instant. Now, a background check is often a month long wait affair around here now, with 10 business days wait that start the next business day after paperwork and counted to up to next business day after the 10 passed, and that's the best case when a 'proceed' arrives on time. And still, the worst is yet to come. My beautiful state goes toward total disarmament, of the law-abiding population that is.
