NEW 629 and 686 NO LOCK MOUNTAIN GUNS ANNOUNCED!

As promised, visited the Smith and Lipseys booths yesterday morning.
Got to check out the 36, 10 and both Mountain Guns; absent was the 19.

To my eye, they're not what they were pre mim and hammer mounted FP, but they're a step in the right direction. I do like the wood grips on all of them.

I also hit the Colt booth. Good news, there's a blue 2.5" coming in 2025 and an 6" Anaconda in 454 Casull next year.

They will never be the same as those produced in the pre-Bangor Punta era. I don't see S&W ever returning to nickel plated finishes and it would be impossible to return to the carbonia blue finish as the recipe is reported to have been destroyed. There will not be a return to pinned barrels or a press fit frame lug nor recessed chambers.

I know, but at least they are dealing with the IL. Thankfully there are plenty of pre 99 guns still to be found.

Got my sights on that blue 2.5 :)

The problem with the new lockup (combined with the unnecessary "enhanced" forcing cone) is that it appears to not have left enough room for a gas ring. The purpose of the cylinder mounted gas ring is to prevent carbon/lead from building up between the axle/arbor and cylinder, thus causing the cylinder to bind.

Without a gas ring, any revolver will be more prone to sluggish cylinder rotation or binding while shooting. The current model 66, 19, and 69 revolvers also lack gas rings to my knowledge. This has led to reoccurring complaints about these models.

The L frame did not need any durability enhancements. It was created due to the shortcomings of the K frame magnum. I honestly think this is a cost cutting measure, so that the Model 69 and 686 revolvers can share more components going forward. We are likely to see these unfortunate changes on the standard 686 soon.

The lack of a gas ring is a downgrade that consumers need to be aware of. I'm disappointed to see this on the new 686 Mountain Gun.
Always good to wait for the facts to come in. It's got a gas ring. ;)

Here, from Lipsey's at SHOT: Lipsey's Guns | You've got questions, we've got answers. Here's Bryan from @americanfightingrevolver breaking down the new @smithandwessoninc 686 Mountain Gun. | Instagram

Since it's late Thursday night now and the last day of SHOT is tomorrow, I guess there's no more surprise from Smith or Lipsey's :(. No 27 with 3 1/2" barrel?

Dreaming of a Model 66

The only new double action revolvers I've purchased in the last few years are blue and stainless Pythons and an Anaconda. If S&W brings back the Model 66 without a certain part which shall not be named, well who needs two Pythons anyway.:-)

Looking carefully at the pictures on line from SHOT show. it would appear that the 686 mountain gun does NOT have the usual front lock that engages the end of the ejector rod?? Why would they delete this? A ball detent does not seem as secure as locking at the end of the ejector rod.

I think the ball detent is a much stronger and more durable design with less flex, if executed properly.

Let's be honest, now that S&W fans have managed to convince them to eliminate the ridiculous storage lock, we need to start demanding a modern triple lock revolver. Why can't we have lock up at end of ejector rod AND a ball detent?

I'll be looking to get the 686 version

What I find interesting is that from listening to Bobby Tyler of TGW. He explained he had acquired the rights to Bear Hug grips. Evidently a favorite of Skeeters back in the day. The MGs are sporting TGW version of the Bear Hugs.

I think BH started in the 60's. Changed ownership once or twice and pretty much went away by the 80's or early 90's ?

I've heard Bear Hugs mentioned often in prior decades by various gun writers but have never had a set in hand

The profile visually appears to be similar to Cokes. If anyone knows more please share.

anyone else look at those photos and realize they have different triggers? my 629-6 has that "stamped" sheet metal trigger, these have very nice looking polished stainless triggers...

does that mean we could hope for more interesting materials inside the lockwork?

Sorry but there is no such thing as a sheet metal trigger. It's either a machined trigger or a MIM trigger. The "stainless Steel" triggers have always been carbon steel with a flashchrome finish. SS will not hold the fine sear engagements requires on the wheelguns.

Incase someone is stuck in California like me and was wondering. I emailed Lipsey's and asked if they were going to submit them to get on the roster. Got an answer back that they were in the process of getting them approved.

Placed an order for the 686 version yesterday. Can't wait! I haven't been this excited for a new S&W revolver model in, well, ever!
