I have been looking at a 17-2 with a 5 inch barrel. I have never seen one before. Does anyone know of this?

Three possibilities: really a 6" barrel, shortened from a 6 (or 8 3/8)" by someone after production, or a factory special order, sadly least likely.

Clear images of the barrel length with a ruler along its length, and closeups of the barrel crown and front sight ramp, would really help here.

I have seen a factory model stamped 5" model 17, a factory special order, so it is possible.

Still need the images please. It may be factory, factory quality equivalent, or obviously not. A letter of authenticity from the SWHF may be recommended if unclear.

I am looking at the factory original box. It is marked 17-2, 5" barrel, TT, TH

If the box appears original and supports the configuration of the gun I'd grab it, assuming it is for sale. And then letter it. I'd take the chance that it is factory original if the price/condition is at all reasonable. Pictures would help if you can post some.

Here is the best picture I have right now.
Not sure if I did this right.

I have a 1947 K22 with what seems to be a factory 5" barrel (has been discussed here). No record of it ever leaving the factory. Yours with the original properly marked box is a great find, IMO.

It has the proportions of a 5" barrel. No way to be sure without more images. It's a rare gun if factory done...see post #8. :)

What are they asking for the gun?

GB#1087439267 2,100. The description says 6" and the barrel looks like a 6" but truly hard to tell for sure. Not sure why the box says 5", but it could be mis-marked. I think someone made an expensive gamble on this one as I doubt a modified 6" would even be worth that much.

That gb number doesn't come up,
Pretty sure the rules say no to links to "active auctions"
If so completed auction links are A-Ok.
If not someone will correct me.

Definitely a 6" barrel. The only serial number shown in the pics is on the box label. Does the box even match the gun? The serial number on the box label dates from 1966. Gun has non-diamond target stocks which were not in use prior to 1968. Anytime an "unusual" gun appears, and at a high price point, it pays to due a bit of extra due-diligence.

IMO, the buyer of this gun just paid for an expensive lesson.

I was looking at a couple of other S&W's this seller had two days ago. Most of what he has are "new in box" and high condition (and high priced) and his feedback is almost perfect. This is one where I would have trusted the sellers title and description of the gun. Or at least asked him to measure the barrel again. I hope you luck out and it is a 5" but don't get your hopes up. BTW, it looks like you got outbid with someone using Buy It Now.

Link Just a moment...
