Has anyone ever seen a taper like this on a 27 or a 28 barrel??
Not quite a bull barrel, but close..
I have not seen a taper that was that subtle before.
I’m wondering if it was an option or if it’s just the way it came out the factory on this one?
I don’t think the barrel has been shortened, either as it seems to fit into the 5 inch case just right.
Unless that ejector rod looks a little shorter than normal?

Thanks

Hmmmmm... the barrel pin appears to sit proud of the frame surface on the left side, but at or maybe below the surface on the right side. I'd measure the with calipers, I'm thinking the barrel might have had an issue with the forcing cone and was turned back and the shank and forcing cone recut, giving the barrel a short, tapered section where it meets the frame.

I thought so, but the pic of the gun in the case shows the muzzle is tight in the insert. If it was shortened the barrel would be shorter.

Im not seeing anything abnormal with the barrel itself but agree the barrel set pin in the frame looks mushroomed on the left side and shallow on the right side, both are signs the barrel was likely removed but its hard to tell from the pics could just be the lighting.
On a side note do you know the serial number or how early a dash 2 it is?
There are very subtle hints the barrel might be a little bit older than the frame.

I agree that it looks like the back shoulder of the barrel was turned down so that it threaded farther into the frame so it could have a new forcing cone. I have done this on eroded forcing cones and large gaps. No need to touch the muzzle. I trimmed 4 turns off the shoulder of a 4" model 53 so it would have enough shank to work in a model 18 That made the barrel .125 shorter. I also has to shorten the ejector rod.

I asked about it…
This was my question:

I have a question about this one! I have never seen a 27 with a barrel taper so subtle. It almost looks like a BBL like a 29 or 25 or 57, but there is a taper. It is just not quite as defined.. Is there any story behind this or did it just turn out this way?? It looks like it almost wants to be a bull barrel, but it is a 27…”

This was the response:
“Good evening sir. Thank you for your interest and email pertaining to ______..
Since the 5 inch were made in such few numbers for a hand full of years looking back in S&Wesson records and factory notes they share the barrel with the 8 inch guns obviously manufacturing one barrel in limited quantities to serve two uses. look closely at an eight 27 2.
This was a common practice with many manufacturers even done on rifle platforms. “

I don't think that explanation is accurate., Here's a pretty good pic of what a 27-2 5" should look like (top photo)

The photo at the bottom is a 27-2 8 3/8

Stands to reason that if the barrel was turned back the ejector rod will be shorter than a standard ejector rod.
Do you have another N frame ejector rod to measure and compare?
