Got a new 629, I think -6, and when you pull it to full cock to fire single action, and pull the trigger slowly, it drops into the double action catch. I will probably be sending it back to S&W so I would like to be able to describe the problem better or more concisely using proper terms. But if you know how to fix it and it sounds easy, I may just fix it myself. Been around S&Ws for over 50 years, but not much around MIM lockwork.

Is the strain screw tight? If so and Bubba has not been inside then you have an issue which will likely require a new hammer and or trigger. Call for a shipping label and send it home for factory parts and repair.

Likely description of "push off", which can occur when the interface of the hammer or trigger are damaged, or have been tampered with. If you have a trigger gauge, check your SA to see if it's around 3 pounds. A very light (below 2.5 pounds) SA pull indicates alteration or damage.

If you are comfortable checking the action, you might check to see if the rebound slide spring is a 17 coil OEM length spring.....and it is "flat ground" at each end. If someone has substituted a lighter aftermarket rebound spring, or has cut coils from the original spring, the SA can be adversely affected.

Sometimes, if the hammer and trigger are unmolested, replacing the defective or altered rebound slide spring with a new OEM spring can solve the push off problem without further intervention.

It is a new 629 send it back. But what is; "pull the trigger slowly"? Are you attempting to "stage the trigger"?

I'm a long time S&W guy too and lockwork is lockwork. No one should mess with since 98% it is good to go from the Factory.

If you pull the trigger quickly when at full cock it malfunctions less often than if you do a slow pull as if target shooting. Nothing is modified, the gun is new.

Tighten the string screw. 90% chance that is the problem. Maybe not, but some bozo will always try to lessen the trigger pull and that is where they will start, and it's the easiest to check/correct.

If the gun is brand new, it should go back to S&W. I cringe when saying that because these days sending a gun into the factory for repair is pretty much like betting your bankroll all on 32 red in roulette. :o

That said, because the revolver is brand new it should go back. I wish you luck and let us know how it comes back.

The way I am interpreting your description is that a slow pull results in trigger kick back, where the trigger kicks forward at the break. This is due to too light a trigger pull due to poor engagement of the slot in the hammer and the knife edge of the trigger not correctly engaging. Smith seems to be sending out guns with single action trigger pulls of around 2.5 pounds, where the old standard was 3.5.

If I am correct, and the strain screw is fully tightened, then it needs a new hammer and/or trigger, and should be sent back for correction.
