Clarification on S&W 442 Models

Hello all,
Looking for clarification on something. I know there were many differences between the 442-1 and 442-2, including the latter having the internal (infernal) lock and MIM parts, not forged (I think), but was there ever simply a 442 no dash, before the 442-1? Looking at values, some folks either are not listing them correctly when auctioning/selling them, or there really are just regular 442's. Thanks!

The 442 was introduced in 1993. In 1996 the 442-1 was introduced on the slightly larger J Magnum frame.

I suspect a mis-stamped gun, as the only difference between a -1 and -2 is the lock.

Clarification on S&W 442 Models

This seems like a good place to drop my old 442–2. This is one of my favorite revolvers. It is not fancy or particularly special from a collection standpoint. I have carried it a lot. Has thousands of rounds downrange. It is from 2006 or 2007. Trust it to be very reliable.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't there a 042 that pre dated all of the above? I believe a fellow officer I worked with had one---polished blue...so numbered because they hadn't quite gotten the numbers figured out. Maybe 500 made before the 442 designation.

You are correct, the 042 was the predecessor to the 442. The basic timeline for the alloy frame “Modern” Centennial goes something like this;
642 early 1990s introduction. Issues with colors not matching.
042 - some of these 642s were blued and over stamped with 042. New non over stamped 042s were also built. Two to three years IIRC was the production span for the 042.
442 was introduced I believe around 1993 in blue/black and matte nickel.
642 was reintroduced with color matching issues resolved around this same time. The Standard Catalog of S&W does a great job explaining the time lines on these models.

I addressed some of this in last year's SWCA symposium exhibit. Covered the no - 642, 638 and 637 with clear anodized frames and, my favorite, the O42.
