The bug has bitten me!

1076, 1006, 1013, 3904, 908, 3913, 3913, 6906, 5903, 915, 4006, 4013tsw, 4053, 4516, 4566. In no particular order. I think that is all.

Traded a 6904 for a Glock 22 because my financially deficient buddy really wanted a better carry gun.

Passed over a 4026 a few years back I wished I had grabbed. Also passed over a 3906 and a 39-2. That was before I got the bug. All were good prices, but I didn't know it.

It is so ironic that a seemingly good sized amount of people enjoy Third Generation autos. I remember when their reign pretty much came to an abrupt end. Not trying to start an argument, just remembering history. And yes, I know, several will say they always appreciated their qualities.
Full disclosure, I am a fan of da/sa autos. Not S&W's, but still a fan.
Kinda like revolvers, I suppose.

I hear what you’re saying, I don’t really think there is irony (generally) because I also don’t believe these are truly all that popular now. They absolutely are popular in here because we are all crazy S&W semiautomatic fans and we love ‘em. Out in the world, I don’t think huge masses of gun guys fawn over them.

I think what history shows us was a natural evolution. DA/SA metal frame duty (and eventually, concealed carry) had a life span, they owned a moment in time and I believe that the pinnacle of the DA/SA duty gun was the S&W 3rd Gen. I think most folks that spend time here might agree.

Out in the world, Sig gets some votes. Ruger made a blip on the radar. CZ/Tanfoglio had success around the world but less here in the US. Smith & Wesson and their history with the 1-2-3rd Gens were the leader and the standard in this type of handgun.

The landscape changed massively with the era of the Tupperware gun. The DA/SA metal framed period of time ended abruptly.

I can think of a funny parallel — not sure who would agree and who would find it a silly or ludicrous opinion:

I think the metal frame DA/SA era ended in a similar fashion to the Hair Metal/Glam Metal era in music when Grunge and Seattle-type bands took over the popular Rock music landscape.

Grunge did not kill the Hair Metal bands, but it opened the door to their demise, and it almost totally killed any new Hair Metal bands from getting a chance. Similarly, DA/SA metal guns survived, but their market share was absolutely cremated in short order.

Just don't get bit by the PC bug .I really like mine , there's a couple I take to the range every week . My 2nd and 3rd gen's mostly sit in one of the safes , the 1006 and 1076 come out once in a while along with the 52 . My favourite though would be my PPC based on a 10-5 , load it with wc's and it's deadly . All in all , I'd say s&w's made some beaut's back in the day , and I'm happy storing mine to pass on to another s&w diehard some day .

I’ve always loved S&W pistols, my first semiautomatic being a brand new Model 59 back in the day (mid 70s)
Recently I’ve added several because the bug hit me again at the turn of the year. Here’s one that I just acquired. It’s a BNIB 459 Gov’t overrun with the dull matte finish.

I'm currently at 18 different 1st, 2nd, & 3rd gen models.
So proud of you!
Happy for you too, and not envious, rather glad that you get to do something we others only dream of.
My real desire is to get better with them, rather than own more of them, and one of them in particular, ridin' on me side this very moment.
Kind and Best to you!

Well, I did it again! I ordered a police trade in 5946. It should arrive at my FFL Monday. Me being 60 miles away, it will probably be Wednesday before I can go there. Hopefully it will be in decent shape. For $269.95, I’m not expecting new condition. It wouldn’t hurt my feelings if it was department marked.

As of last week, Classic was out of stock. Per email to AIM last week, NO Dept Markings. Random sights would imply multiple sources.
I did not ask about condition but previous info was dirty with some external holster wear, less than great grips, but OK inside. Good cleaning, new recoil spring and new factory grips $30 well spent. New SW mags at Midway ~$35 or new MecGar 17rd about the same $ +/-.

Just as a caution, remove slide and check internals and barrel BEFORE you take possession. I had to reject a revolver a few years back from one of the big sellers of police takebacks and it was OK as long as I had not completed FFL transfer - they even paid return shipping. But that was at least 4 years ago - Corporate policies in general seem to be less user/buyer friendly these days.

Brian, good luck. When my Police Department went to the S&W autoloaders besides myself and another cop no one else could shoot "Expert" scores like they did with revolvers. So instead of shooting the "Bonus Course" 30 rounds at 25 yards. They move the target to 7 and 15 yards. Sarge

Like I think I said, I’ve always loved S&W pistols, but the bug caught me around New Years. Here’s a documented NYPD 5946 that I grabbed after the retired officer traded it in…
