I not sure what your measuring sticks are.

As I said, we produce a lot of basic foods, in fact we are a large exporter of agricultural products. We do not produce enough fresh produce, coffee, bananas, etc. items to meet our demand.

I was around in the 1960s and 1970s as a youth and my family has much greater standard of living now verses then....everything from electronics, internet, medical advances, etc., markets today are much more accessible and advanced (at least until this week), greater knowledge, better life expectance, etc. In the 1950s and 1960s the KKK was still running around - Racial inequity, gender discrimination, less equality, etc. It's not really that hard to see how we have advanced since the 1950s and 1960s....but I do realize folks hold on to simpler times...I realize we certainly have problems today....

I mentioned that we cannot produce everything we consume to make a point that imports in many ways increase our standard of living.

Where we have a technologic advantage, superior economies of scale, advanced production capabilities, etc. we still export to the world....

I don't support tariffs....over time they hinder advancement, stifle innovation, add costs, and hinder overall market growth and development, etc.

Russian is a third world country with nukes, oil, and a military that has not stood up to its reputation....not a dynamic economy. China has its own set of problems including large banking and real estate issues - and it is still a centrally controlled economy with the Communist Party leading the way. India is a country with potentially a great future, if they can figure it out how to advance beyond where they are today.

A voice from the past from tick tock :)

I grew up in the 1980s and 90s, the homeless people were usually old drunk dudes out of sight or confined to one area of town. Now, we have drugged out zombies of all ages EVERYWHERE. Homeless camps EVERYWHERE.

I'd argue that the social issues are worse now than they were then.

Can the average family of four afford a house, two vehicles and everything needed to run a household with one paycheck without .gov assistance? My Dad did all that with just a high school education and even managed to send my sister and I, (GenX) to private school and SAVE money.

Can the average GenZ do what my dad did then, today? I don't think so.

If you under estimate Russia, China, India, and the other BRICS nations and think they aren't a threat looking to unseat the US as the sole superpower, you're not paying attention.

If you want to keep the pharmaceutical manufacturing base in China and India, we should just keep doing what we're doing now. After all the status quo has got us $37+ Trillion in debt.

I think I've seen enough here. The people who believe tariffs will help will not be convinced otherwise, history be darned. The people who believe tariffs will hurt and we will not be able to make up more than a fraction of the foreign manufacturing we are taxing within a decade at least will also not be convinced otherwise.

I do want to point out a few historical facts: When William McKinley imposed tariffs in 1890, the Republicans lost 50% of their seats in the very next election. When Smoot-Hawley was enacted in 1930, the Republicans lost control of both the House and Senate for the next 60 years. So there is that...

He who ignores history... You know the rest.

Victor Davis Hanson absolutely nails it here regarding tariffs and what Trump is doing. And this Tucker Carlson interview is fantastic as well.

Never expected to see veterans demonstrating against tariffs and the president in ruby red Alamogordo, an Air Force town with lots of retirees, by Holoman AFB. We were there this morning to early afternoon, and the protest at 10th and White Sands Blvd grew exponentially with lots of white hair and service ball caps in the crowds.

Alamogordo is home of the founder and long-term president of Cowboys for Trump. We didn't see any pro-tariff demonstrators, but I don't linger there. Large groups of angry people is no place for me. Had I not needed to go to Walgreen's, I'd have never slowed down.

Blue NM is red south of I-40 and east of I-25 and is known to poli-sci folks as 'Little Texas,' with our oil patch, Holoman and Canon AFBs, White Sands Missile Range, and the MacGregor Range desert warfare range adjoining Texas' Ft. Bliss.

What did the protest accomplish?

If NM is red S of I40 and E of I25, how did Gabe, Teresa, both Dems, get re-elected? Apparently it's not as red as you say it is.

Democrats cheat like crazy in the first place, but right now in a non-Presidential election, they have the energy and temporary momentum.

There were a few rent-a-protestor gatherings in NC @ the usual nutjob locations. I was at the gym this afternoon and as usual 4 or 5 Teslas were in the lot, along with a bunch of F150's.
No broken windows, spray paint, keying of cars.

The police in my town don't stand for terrorism, especially the blue type. Come here with your lawyers number if you want to try that ****. :D

1. Don't know and don't care. I just never saw anything like it there.

2. SE NM has been 'little Texas' for decades, and had Republican Congressmen as a rule (Ed Foreman, Harold Runnels, Joe Skeen, Steve Pearce). There have been two Dems representing all of little Texas since the 2nd CD got redistricted; the same R candidate, Yvette Herrell, lost twice. NM CD 2 also contains most of NM west of I-25 and south of I-40 - that part is heavily Democratic. My county, in example, has all Republican local elected officials - that's true across much of NM's 'little Texas.'
