I have been a fan of figuring out my annual taxes myself until the 2024 addition of Turbo tax. They went from a disk download to downloading from their web site and the ship hit the sand. This has been the most frustrating day of my existence on this fair blue globe. It would not allow me to use my phone number of 21 years "somebody else has it", it would not allow me to use my email address of 15 years "somebody else has it". I need to meet "somebody else"! After hours upon hours of trying to just get it to take my data, I gave up and made an appointment with a tax consultant to do my taxes. Its really sad to see an "icon" go down that you once relied on. Now I have lost faith in the system. Anybody else meet "somebody else"!

I have to agree with you. Last year, I gave up on them and went to a tax service. This year, I tried again. What a mess! I felt like I'd fallen into a bag of pretzels.

I picked up the phone and dialed the tax service again. Got an appointment, got some great advice for next year, and had the checks in the mail to the IRS and state DOR.

I hate how congress has a messed up the taxation process so bad we feel the need to consult pros to complete the forms and find out how much more we owe. What ever happened to KISS?

I downloaded the Home/Business and Trust programs back in Feb to my home computer. No issues there, even with the updates.

I'm going to do my taxes this weekend.
If I have any issues, I guess I'll file an extension, go on vacation adopt the Alfred E. Neuman attitude until August/October.

Delta, not that I know anything about it, but it sounds to me like you have an account with Turbotax already. (I think likely that "somebody else" is actually you.) Maybe they created one without your knowledge based on past use of their product? How about try to sign in to your account on their website using your email, and then say you forgot the password and see if they email you how to proceed?

Good luck!

(As for me, the last time I tried to do my own taxes was a lost Sunday in April 1987. My son likes TurboTax though.)

Another TurboTax rant - I finished my Fed and my State.
Ready to file online! They say - file both!
So I'm thinking I'll file the Fed and take one more look at the State.
I fire away with the Fed. Gone, accepted.
Then I return to the State. But - but TurboTax won't let me file it!
After some frustration, I'm beat! You took me down you SOBS!
I print out the State and mail it in.
Sent them a check which just cleared.
TurboTax like lots of consumer software seems to have peaked in being user friendly. They press you continuously on buying extra stuff.

My greatest problem with TT24 was setting up my TT account. After fighting that battle, the procedure for using TT was pretty much as it always has been. I would still rather have it on a CD.

I've used TurboTax since 2003. No problems with it, and usually free through my bank. This year was more of a PITA. WV has a new state-only deduction for personal property tax on my vehicle. TurboTax did not find it and ask for the form. I had to file an amended return a month later, and as of yet, I haven't heard back as to the extra $400+ refund I'm due.

I do my own taxes and a number of family members' taxes every year. I've used Turbo Tax for several years now. Yes, it's download only now as is most software. Very few people have optical drives nowadays. I do, but I'm old.

Tax Act and H&R Block also make tax software. I used Tax Act for years until they got more expensive than Turbo Tax. It was very user friendly. I think Turbo Tax is a bit less user friendly, but it's not terrible. I have no experience with H&R Block's software.

I have a degree in accounting, but I haven't kept up with things, so I like to use software in case I miss something.

Used to use TurboTax, then TaxAct. Been using H&R Block now for several years. Yes, I download it. Not sure why anyone would not want to do that.

I have educated myself to the extent that I can on our tax system. If you don't, then how do you know that the guy you hire is doing it right? Just trust him? Yeah, I'm not big on "just trust me" when it comes to my money!

Got a modest refund this year, so I filed back in February. I usually try to arrange it so that I have to make a modest payment. Regardless of whether you have to pay or not, it makes sense to do your taxes early, so that if you ARE receiving a refund you can get it as soon as possible. If you have to pay, just set it aside and wait until April to send the payment.

Do not -- STUPIDLY! -- imagine that everything is wonderful if you get a big refund. All that means is that you have been loaning the government your money, interest free, for the year. Wouldn't you rather that they loaned YOU money interest free!?!

Went to library and got a 1040-sr with the added deduction already included. filled it out sent it in last week. Get $3600 back from the feds cause don't claim on the monthly annuity. Plus being a billionaire literally increased my refund $2000.

Made a copy to use with my state return for another $400 refund.

They cashed my check two days ago...they'd best enjoy it - no more work for me, no more income!

I doubt they'll believe that! ;)

My major problem is that I have two sources of income for which there is no mechanism to make deductions. This wasn't too much of a problem when I was at work, I just cranked up the deductions from my salary. Now, not only am I about to write a check for what I owe for 2024, but I'll be writing another for my first quarterly payment for this year. Funny thing, but that wipes out the SS back pay I just got.
