CA 395 is my favorite road anywhere. 395 and the roads off of it.
It’s not really on the tourist map, but check out Mono Lake, Bodie, Bishop, Lone Pine and all the way up to Tahoe.
Lots a great spots to shoot.
Like right here…

If you’ve never been to this area, make sure to put it on your list.
Camping, hunting, fishing, shooting.. stunning scenery!

Lone Pine? OMG! Ala- bama Hills!
All of us Movie Buffs know that’s Ground Zero for those B Westerns we dearly Love!
And not just westerns. Some great non-westerns have been filmed there. High Sierra with Humphrey Bogart was filmed in part at Lone Pine, and Out of the Past had Robert Mitchum operating a gas station in Bridgeport. One of my favorites, Bad Day at Black Rock, has a miserable desert town populated by tough guy thugs (Robert Ryan, Lee Marvin, Ernest Borgnine) cleaned up by a one armed and very badass Spencer Tracy. It was filmed in the desert just north of Lone Pine and in the Alabama Hills. If you haven't seen Bad Day at Black Rock, plan on watching it. It's Owens Valley filmmaking at its finest!

I absolutely love it here.
Sadly moving on tomorrow to Placerville, but will see Mono Lake and Tooaz on the way.
Amazing drive. I do it every chance I get.

Used to trout fish all through that area. Stayed in cabins at Convict lake or a houseboat on Shasta. Always bought good bread and stuff in Bishop and a good cafe in Lone Star, but I can't recall the name. Maybe Lonestar Cafe ? Most enjoyable time spent in CA..

From Bishop to Bridgeport, I love it. Lots of places to fish. Maybe I’ll do some shooting next time.

Beautiful area up there. I use to fish the Walker River and some spots at Lake Tahoe. Never did any shooting up there.

My first run in Ca. was the Bishop Run in '89 with my now wife. Up 395, through Yosemite, then down the 99 back to Pendleton. About 1k on a '78 Shovelhead. That girl never complained once sitting on that little P pad on my fender. Yup, she was a keeper!

395 is probably my favorite road anywhere.
CA gets a bad rap, but people who don’t visit are thinking of LA or SF and all the “people” stuff.
The best of CA is outside the city.
Tons of incredible BLM land, abandoned mines, Mountains, lakes and beauty that never gets old to me. Every visit is like the first time.
Mini Lake… Bodie… Salton Sea, Borrego .. tip of the iceberg

Used to mule deer hunt in that area. Not far from there, just off 395, is a graveyard. I used to visit with a little girl, interred there. How and why is for another day.

We would stay at a certain hotel in Bishop on the east side of 395 with a Mexican restaurant a block south with excellent Chile verde. Also on 395 is the town location in High Plains Drifter on the shore of Mono Lake. Here’s a guy at that site…

As nice as this sounds, I'm pretty sure shooting BLM activist would bring unwanted law enforcement attention. :)
