I've been thinking about a model 16 for some time and am getting closer to getting one. My question is the barrel length, not sure whether I should start with a 4" or 6". Thoughts on which one and why would be appreciated.

Which 16? An original or a -4 etc?

A -4 would be fine for me.
I have a original 16 in 32 long. Love 32's it shoots very good. My buddy has a 16-4 4in its very accurate also. I have a 631 4in and it shoots way better then i ever expected. I love smith's but have a colt OM that is a tack driver too.
Prior to the -4 model there were only about 10 4" factory Mod 16's. So if you want a 4", it would have to be a -4, and they aren't easy to locate either. The Classic Mod 16 is a 6" -2 or -3, but they are also very expensive. Good luck.
I have an original K-32 and also 16-4's in 4" and 6". All are fun to shoot and are very accurate, the 6" 16-4 shot the pictured target at 15 yards from a rest with .32 long wadcutters (about 10 years ago when I could see better and my hands were steadier). Both are fairly scarce, so the first order of business would be to find one. As far as price goes, depending on condition, ballpark for a 16-4 these days is probably around $2000, and an original K-32/Model 16 around $3000.

+1 to that. Even the -4’s are like hens teeth. I picked up the very first (and only)6” -4 I’d ever laid eyes on. Glad to have it, and it will go to my son when I’m gone.
