Is there any chance the serial number has a leading "1" ?

Interestingly, the Standard Catalog of S&W, 5th Edition by Supica and Nahas where we typically dig for serial number information states as the the D-prefix with six following digits covered many K-frame revolvers but neither the Models 64 or 65, and that your 64 should have a prefix of 1D.

In any case, that serial number shows up as 1974 production. It's certainly possible that the SCSW5 has incomplete information here.

Always a good idea to add pictures when you seek some information about one. Plus... we love pictures! :)

The Model 64-1 was introduced in 1972. D658519 is a 1974 serial number, so this is definitely in the right range.

A Model 64 with the 4" barrel has serial number D425963 (1972).
A Model 64 with the 2" barrel has serial number D775837 (1974).

The OP's gun and serial number are perfectly legitimate. It simply isn't accurate to say that a Model 64-1 must have a 1D serial number.
