Rehab Torture

I fell on the ice last January at a dock slamming my left shoulder and hip ,nothing broke just very very sore. Was placed on restricted duty four weeks sitting the office . Went back to work then in April strained the same shoulder at work , placed back on restricted duty then rehab. First couple weeks was two hours stretching with treadmill and bike. Now it's four hours of treadmill ,bike ,row , weights, stretch and machines again ., four more sessions to go they are trying to kill me . I just turned 65 what they want me to do may not happen my right ankle is now swollen and sore.:mad:

Thanks guess need to be more patient and take my time , if finish too early have to start over to compete 4 hours. Therapist has eased up on couple of exercises that was too difficult for me. Another benefit will be able to shoot my M&P Compact again , could only endure couple mags last Saturday
 
I've had good and bad experiences with PT. Sometimes it helps; sometimes it makes the condition worse. I've found if something just starts hurting, PT doesn't help' If you've had surgery or an obvious injury, it may.
 
Fathers 1st older sister who was head of anesthesiology department at the hospital where I was born was dying of a heart valve issue and they sent her to rehab for 60 days. The insurance ran out and she went back to the hospital and died two days later.
Doctor told me I would be in pain for the rest of my life and there was nothing I could do about it (car wreck) and even surgery could make the pain magnitudes greater and I would probably commit suicide.
Got rid of the doctor.
Bought an air mattress and an inversion table.
Now 37 years later I play pickleball 2 hours a day and am generally pain free.
The doctor is probably dead by now.
Chiropractors were worthless.
Your body will tell you if therapy of any kind is helping.
That has nothing to do with what insurance will pay for treatment.

I’m two months into rehabbing my knee replacement — despite only two knees, this is my fourth knee rehab experience. I like to think I am getting better at it. (And also fervently hope it is my last knee rehab experience.)

First month or so I would time pain meds to kick in just when my PT gal was trying to turn my poor knee into a pretzel.

PT is no fun, but, as everyone says, worth taking seriously.

I had both knees fully replaced in 2016 and 2017. Worst pain I've ever had. I went to rehab 3 times at $50 a pop. I thought why pay some one to hurt me when I can just do it myself for free. That was the first time. I just started walking, up and down my 150ft driveway on a 10 degree incline. Did that for 10 reps every day. That was the 3rd week. The forth week I walked down to the corner and back which is 1/4 mile each way.. After 5 weeks I was back to my daily 2.5 mile walk. My sister had her knee replaced last year and did nothing because it hurt. She couldn't be bothered to listen to me and she paid for it mightily.

Started with maybe a half mile and a walker about a week or ten days after the op. Increased distance, abandoned walker, gradually.

Walking, for elderly me, is a high point of my day.

(But the PT is good for flexion. How far you can bend that knee counts. 128° on Monday.)

I got rid of the walker the first week. Nearly fell in a restaurant, I said that's it I'm walking from now on. It made me feel like an old person. I was 61 at that time. I could never get the hang of a cane. Screw it!!!

I am a cautious guy. Baby steps. Walker, cane, little by little, PT every day, bring myself back, slowly but surely, never miss a day's home PT or a PT outpatient appointment. Getting stronger and stronger.

Different strokes. Whatever works for ya, that's the path. I do believe we all get out of it what we put into it,
 
Have really messed up lower back, scheduled for PT in the pool but was 2 weeks bedore I could get in. MD gave me 4 pages of PT to do at home. FIRST time I did them pain was gone! Went to pool PT and was ok but home PT has been very effective and riding stationary bike .

Sorry you’re having trouble upon trouble, but don’t worry - it’s only going to get worse as you continue to age.

After I retired from the Corps, I got a degree in Nursing. I did 20 years as a Med/Surg Nurse and 14 of that working with the Orthopedic patients (mainly hips and knees). Rehab may hurt some and just be uncomfortable to others, but for 99% of the patients it works and they are better off for undergoing it!

Do what you can, don't over do it.

Went to a hospital rehab few years ago with pulled leg muscle , there was folks there in bad shape hope you heal ok so can get around better

I was hurting bad this morning , soaked in epson salt bath last night and couple extra strength Tylenol another one this morning. Will do some light exercise and walk before it gets hot and humid.

We had our patients take 1000 Mg of Tylenol every six hours post op. Then as the pain lessened they could start reducing the frequency. For severe pain we gave a narc with no tylenol in it. FDA states no more than 4 grams of tylenol in a day.
 
I've started at a gym. I got a physical and when you turn 68 they drop the target for cholesterol. I was over by a point or two. If I was 67 I'd be fine. I don't want to take any meds I don't have to and my Medicare gives me a free gym membership so I joined the YMCA near the house.

Not my first time in a gym but I'm finding at a month to go before I'm 69 I can do more than I should. I've backed off and changed my routine but I think I better hire me a personal trainer at the gym to help me work it out.

It's helping my hips a lot. I have a lot of stiffness in the muscles and arthritis in the joints. If I do too much the muscles are fine but the joints are not. If I do too little then the muscles want to stiffen. I've got to find the right balance and types of exercise and stretching. I've had one arm muscle that's nagging me. I must have done something wrong.

Getting old is more complicated than I thought it would be. Right at the time you're not as sharp as you used to be.
 
Some 6 years ago, I strain both Rotator Cuff working my perimeter fencing.
I was unable to raise either arm anywhere above the shoulders.
So, the DOC (after several Xray's) prescribed Physical Therapy.
I had full Med company Insurance. part of my contract, but has a co-pay of
$25.
However, Physical Therapy an additional $95 per visit so $120 per.
I was unaware and suppressed, the first visit. Shown some rubber band stretchy thing to pull, and Bike like crank thing for your arms and lean isometrics style in a door jam. Once shown what I was to do, the guy attendant left to flirt with the cute girl attendant in leotards. I only saw spoke to him again when he asked for my Co-pay ??? . I had 6 appointments (the one down) I never when back.
No way he (they) profited to pay me no further never mind 5 more times.
I now knew what to do and did it at home, he can pimp his style without my $$$
BTW my shoulders healed.
