DO NOT ASK sign

Actually, Virginia has that (blue) paint law with the option of white paint. The stripe is supposed to be about a foot long, 6 inches wide and on trees about 100 feet apart.
Actually by code it is suppose to be purple paint 2"x8" vertical with center of paint between 3' and 6' off the ground on trees, fence posts and road border areas. No distance between painted areas are specified.

NY's law is that posted signs must be X feet apart, and on all 4 sides of the property. If in compliance it automatically means no trespassing.

But, the state also provides stickers for your signs that state that access WILL be provided if the person contacts the owner and asks.

Hunting season coming up. Property is well posed plus additional signage at all entrances. Still get lots of people driving up and knocking on doors, looking in windows to see who is home. Getting pretty tired of stopping a guy in a pickup after he drives a mile up my driveway to ask to hunt or to offer to shoot coyotes. Usually something like "Hey I wanted to ask if I can hunt here." I say did you see the no trespass and no hunting signs? Yeah, but I wanted to talk to the owner. We've been hunting this land for generations (usually lies). Prosecuted a few poachers but they still keep coming. Always the same story - I know the owner and he said I can hunt/fish here. What's his name, what does he drive? I don't remember... Only been here a few years but the old manager was here for 30+ and never allowed any hunting other than him and his buddies. Thinking about adding DO NOT ASK signs but I assume I'll get, Yeah I saw the sign but I figured I'd ask anyway. Actually stopped the Porta John driver who was wandering around and he said I'm gonna get to know the owner here so I can hunt this land. Cattle farm in Virginia for reference. Yes, we have cameras. Thoughts?
Is there any "camouflage " that would suggest looking elsewhere? Maybe use poison ivy "pots" to distribute around?

Trespassers will take advantage every opportunity they get.

If you make it benignly inhospitable, you may get relief. Good luck!!

In NY it is illegal to enter someone else's property whether it's posted or not. But obviously it's better to post to avoid honest mistakes. I hate the looks of yellow signs hanging all over the place. On my 50ac WVa property I posted the corners with nice custom made medal signs. I'm in the process of putting purple paint stripes sparingly on side 3 sides. My friend said my signs seem more like a suggestion than a warning. That's good by me.

I posted a correction to my post above that apparently didn't stick. So, from the Code of Virginia:

18.2-119 covers trespassing in general. If you warn people (cell phone video makes great documentation, the few times necessary, I handed out written trespass notices-with their names & drivers license #s) if they trespass after that it's a class 1 misdemeanor.

18.2-134.1 covers the use of signs or paint stripes not less than 2 inches wide and 8 inches long, placed 3-6 feet above the ground/water as no trespassing signs for hunters, trappers or fishermen. Colors are specified in the game laws, white is an authorized color. Note 18.2-134 make such trespass a class 1 misdemeanor. Note: I can't find the documentation, but on the job, 100 feet between signs was the required maximum distance to for trespass to be legally an offense.

18.2-137 makes destroying, damaging, defacing ........any property not his own a class one misdemeanor if the damage is less than $1000, a Class 6 felony if more.

I have had a few times where we arrived at our lake property and found someone's boat on our dock and a family sitting around the beach front campfire. In British Columbia you do not own a wharf/dock if it is located Crown Land which nearly every lake is, you only can actually retain ownership of anything above the high water mark, same goes for beach front. Whenever you do any work to improve your beach front you by law should have it approved. You technically cannot boot someone off your wharf/dock, most people I encountered were respectful of your private ownership and moved off as soon as you made your presence known. I did arrive one evening and found an eighteen foot power boat tied up to my dock right where I usually tied mine when it was launched. I'm understanding enough to give someone a break if they ran out of fuel or had a mechancal problem. This was a modern boat and everything seemed in good order, I launched my boat and moved theirs over to the other side. I put a note on the windshield about this being a private dock and allowed them a day to move it. The guy came down Saturday and asked if he could use our launch to pull his boat out. I asked if his boat was operational, he said that it was. I told him he could drive it over to the public marina and haul it out there. He said "The public marina is three miles away, your launch is right here." I told him "That is absolutely correct, I paid $15K to install this launch for our usage not for public use." He looked at me like I was from Mars and said "Dick!" I told him "You got that right, I've been a Dick all my life, my dad's a Dick too." We had neighbors that never spoke five words to us in a year come over and ask if they could use my launch to pull their boat out, I told them the same thing. Fences make good neighbors, I did tell my neighbors just like I told this guy, if it was an emergency of course but if just a convenience go public like everyone else.

Sadly there is little to zero Respect, Responsibility and Courtesy left in our society. Sadly most of those under 65 were not raised the American way where the family(father, mother and kids) knew or learned these things. Thanks to tv, movies and mostly internet garbage has given us what we have….nuf sed.

A ranch manager in charge of 7 contiguous large propertys, they had trespassers often. They would cut the locks on the gates, mostly Yote hunters. He would find their truck, remove all the wheels, including spare. He would leave a note saying your wheels can be retrieved from the Sheriffs Office. (it was a loooong walk).
This was just outside of Walden CO.

My West Virginia property has ZERO trespassing issues. I have several cellular cameras running all year long. Occasionally I'll get a pic of a neighbors dog but that's it. Most of the places around me are larger than mine. And I don't believe there's a lot of hunting in the area, as I didn't hear a ton of shooting last yr on opening day of deer season. But it just occurred to me that the surrounding land owners are older. There's not a bunch of 20 somethings on the mountain. Maybe that has something to do with it. Also, Greenbrier County land is expensive. I think people who own it take pride in it and respect their land as well as others.
