3914DAO from WisconsinTransfers came in

Not at all true as the 53/54 guns are not striker fired.

Really? You don't say...

They are a modified design to fire DAO and as closely as possible imitate the trigger pull of DAO revolvers. Speculation is that they were designed for agencies that wanted to transition from revolvers to semi autos and make that transition as easy as possible.

The 53/54 and almost all other S&W "DAO" guns, plus platforms like Glock and Kahr, share the same fundamental characteristic of a partially energized firing system with no restrike. It doesn't make a squat of difference whether that system is hammer or striker fired.

A DA revolver and a 3914DAO have similar trigger weight, stroke distance, and have "restrike" (or advancement to next round for the wheelgun) capability. They are far more analogous to each other than the other comparison case.

maybe this is helpful info..

i just went and dry fired the 6946 DAO. The first pull cocks the gun and drops the hammer, the second pull is dead (action didn't cycle)

dry fired the 3914DAO, The first pull cocks the gun and drops the hammer, and so does every trigger pull after that.

granted, 6946 isn't a 53/54 but it's widely accepted as typical S&W DAO. The action definitely operates differently on the 3914DAO.

Yup- I am not quite where the contention is coming from on this topic. Facts are facts.

S&W may have developed the XX4X, XX5X and XX8X to have "revolver-esque" consistent triggers, but they are far from the specs on the 3914DAO, which comes close as you can get to matching a DA-ONLY wheelgun. It's really not an arguable point.

You can make one from a 908 pretty easily. Or you can make a 3913DAO from a 3913. The hardest part would be finding a firing pin retainer, which is the replacement for the safety/decocker. Numrich used to have them, but I didn't seem them still available on my list visit to the web site.

Ebay would be my next place to look.

The 3914 DAOs are really nice little guns.

It's a shame they didn't stay in production longer.

I found them well made, completely reliable and more accurate than they needed to be.

Even today, I'd take one over a Shield or one of the similar guns on the market.

I've actually been thinking about a CS9 DAO and wondering how doable that would be

About few years ago Bass Pro Shops (or Cabelas? ) had NIB S&W 5946 from NYPD for sale. I wanted to buy one...... but with the 15 round hi-cap magazines, they were not legal for sale in Massachusetts. (ironic because they were built here).
I think they were $699?

That was about 8 years ago ... I know 'cause I picked one up.

These guns were reportedly unissued, overstock inventory from the guns that were being held to supply NYPD. After NYPD dropped the 5946 from its approved duty weapon list, S&W wholesaled all the remaining inventory off to Cabelas.

All of these guns came w/ three (3) 15-round magazines, Novak factory night sights, & were shipped in the factory S&W blue plastic hard case. Some guns were Springfield MA stamped, others from the Houlton, ME factory.

I am fortunate to own one. It's a good gun.

At one time the guide rod broke under recoil. It took me about a year to find and aquire another one.

Other than that, the gun is fine and makes for a decent concealment gun.
you have one in DAO?

I have on in TDA, and i like it quite a bit.. mags are tough to come by. I am kicking myself for passing on one recently that wasn't a horrible deal and had a spare mag. The only thing better than having one is having two. I'm going to comfort myself saying it was a stainless one like mine and i want blued.. Neither one of them are easy to stumble into, but they do pop up..

I was also wondering about the feasibility of shortening a stainless guide rod from another model and swapping over to the satin chrome trigger and hammer. I don't think i've ever heard of the plastic guide rods failing before.. I might better look for one before i need it!

A CS9 DAO would be a pretty decent ccw

Jack First still has stainless ones in stock but at $78.00 they aren't cheap.

Yes, I have a factory CS9D. DAO from the factory. No idea how many were produced.

I eventually came across a "CS9 parts gun" on an auction forum, bought it and got the replacement guide rod I needed.

Somewhat off the original thread, but the CS9D exist in both silver and blue. The 2 I have are both Double Strike Capable.

The blue is extremely rare - I have only ever seen one blue CS9D EKY75xx Product code 103886 dated by SW as year 2000 - Double Strike Capable.

Silver produced 2000-2009 observed S/N in TDP65xx-66xx Product code 103888 - 4 observed Spec Ord 9301 but Mfg Date per SW of TDP665x comes back 11/2000, EKY (2000), VJB-VJL (2001-2003), and 1 BDK99xx Spec Ord 9075 March 2009 perSW.

CS40D more common in both Blue and Silver (Mostly EKY + TDU, VJx, & BDH - 1999-2006 observed). CS45D rare - I have only seen 3 (VJC, VJJ, BAY) all Silver (2003 & 2004 observed)

Wow! I wasn't aware any were produced!

Very interesting markings on the CS9D, I am trying to think if I've seen them abbreviate "Springfield, MA" before

I hope if I ever find one for sale that it shows some wear so I can carry it around with a clear conscience!
