Do you have a dedicated "truck or trunk" gun?

I don't keep a gun in my vehicle. I might leave a carry gun short term if I'm entering a gun free zone. If you do that and someone steals your vehicle, you just armed a criminal.
I never lock my car at the farm. In almost 30 years I never had anything stolen from my property...but I had many people gift me dogs :)
Only reason my truck is locked is because the truck locks and sets the alarm couple minutes after I shut off the engine and close the door.

I have a couple of bubba-sporterized Spanish Mausers that fill that purpose. They are unloaded but the bolts are open and they are accompanied by multiple loaded chargers. During deer season, until my tags are filled, I always keep my deer rifle, ammo, and my orange camo vest in the rear cargo compartment along with a 357 or 44 magnum revolver in the console.

Years ago while dating my now wife we went to a concert at the Syria Mosque venue in Pittsburgh's Oakland section. There was no parking available nearby so we parked in Schenley Park and walked to the venue. We were young and in love. When I parked my truck there were a few Pgh. Police officers directing traffic across the street.
I was packing my Target 2" Mod 60 and was going to put it in the glove box but instead left it in my jacket pocket.
Enjoyed the concert, but when I got back someone broke the vent window, opened the door and rifled the glove box.
No police to be seen.
I'll never leave a gun in my truck.

P365 on me or in center console. Probably a 10/22 with Tech Sights folded up in rear seat. During deer season it's a 6" 629 and a deer caliber rifle. Mostly a Ruger 77/44.

Sometime during this past year I left the Malibu unlocked. The thieves every once in a while will do the try the doors and if unlocked they rifle through everything. This time they got a loaded magazine for my carry that I had in the console compartment. Stupid me, but I have never left my gun in a car all night. If a store or whatever has a No Guns, Knives, or other weapons sign on the front door, I just ignore it.(what a rebel!!) Bunch of penny ante thieves & wannabes in this town. Darned punks.
Syria Mosque! High school concert days long gone by!

I kept a stainless Charter Arms 44 Bulldog in the pocket behind the passenger seat for a while, but got paranoid someone might steal it. I always have my Sig P365 on me, and I take this on road trips. Keep it in the back seat floorboard with a loaded mag, but empty chamber. Also keep a pouch that holds 3 extra 30 round AR mags and 3 P365 mags.

Never needed it, but it's kinda nice to know it's there. I keep it in my bedroom any other time.

I don't leave stuff in my vehicles, and leave it anywhere out of sight. But if I do put one in the vehicle, it's an 870 - like a Tac-14, but with an 18.5 barrel and mag tube.

I keep extra shells in an M60/240 cloth gunners pouch/bandolier that I modded with a chopped up bungie cord and keeper to keep things closed. I'm cheap.

I've gone few different choices over the years. And based on where I'm going and what's legal.

Last week I picked-up a 1980's era Mossberg 500 w/28" rib barrel for $100. There was some rust on the outside of the barrel, but overall, not too bad. About an hour in the garage cleaning, adding a new mag tube spring, cutting the barrel down to 18 1/4", and adding a new gold bead to the barrel rib. I now have a nice inexpensive truck gun that's legal in most states. A few days later I took it to the range to verify reliability and accuracy. I've got a trip to NM next month, and it will probably go with me in the lock box I have in the back of my truck.

Short answer, "No".

I have yet to hear a reputable trainer advocate long term storage of a gun in your car. In fact most of them warn against it.

I think I've read at least article from every one of the name gun writers saying that it's a bad idea.

When I lived in Colorado Springs it was on the news that at least one firearm every day was stolen from a vehicle in Colorado Springs. I don't know how accurate it's Nexus but the cop said that supposedly most of the time the car the gun was taken from was unlocked.

First of all I couldn't care less what gun writers trainers and so called experts have to say….. having a truck gun doesn't mean it's always in the truck and left unattended. I think most people take it in and out of truck. Unless they live in a VERY remote area. I can see some ranchers leaving them in their rig.

Years ago, when I worked at a car dealership, an older truck came in on trade where the owner had mounted two old car speakers underneath the dashboard. He had cruiser stuck to them. To look inside the truck or even being inside, you'd never even know it was there.

I have worked for Sheriffs, and with Deputies who have left long guns in their vehicles for their entire term they served - I had to repair one that was so rusty you could not open the bolt, it was a full auto Ruger.

OTOH, just after I left the Memphis area, the FBI lost a whole Suburban load of MP-5s, and one PD, who I did not work for but knew some of the offiicers, lost a crate of Uzis which they were considring for their SWAT team - the crate was sitting on the loading dock, never got issued - I have no idea if any of them showed up. At the time they were considering issuing Beretta 92s and the Uzis for SWAT - they ended up not adopting either.

I'm neither for or against leaving a long gun in a vehicle - it will just depend on where and how the vehicle is stored. But I would advise checking it every month at least to make sure it is in working order (if it is not kept in a case I would store it with some tape over the muzzle - bugs have a way of builting nests in dark places!).

The opening post explicitly states a dedicated gun that is kept in your vehicle all the time.

As much as you don't care about trainers or gun writers is how much I care about your opinion of trainers and gun writers but I also cited a CSPD police report that stated that every single day in Colorado Springs a gun is stolen from a car. I'm assuming that's an average. It might be three one day and none the next but in aggregate 365 guns at least are stolen from a car in Colorado Springs every year.

A long long time ago somebody broke into my truck in St Petersburg Florida. I don't think they took anything worth taking. I had a boombox in the cab. I think they took that. But that one incident was enough to teach me that it could happen to me

If you want to leave an unsecured weapon in your vehicle you're going to no matter what I say. But I'm not going to do that.
