Guys a week or so back I showed you all my police surplus Mossberg M590A1 and after a thorough cleaning and a magazine tube spring change it’s a fantastic little shooter.

After buying it on a whim for a rock bottom price I’ll have to say, this impulse purchase is rapidly becoming one of my favorite scatterguns.

The gun came off duty equipped with an old fashioned Speedfeed stock that stored four extra shells. While interesting, the length of pull was too long to be comfortable and the shell stowage and retrieval was dubious at best. Kind of clumsy, slow and awkward to fetch shells from in a hurry.

I decided to get a few upgrades for this old battle dog:

First was a new Magpul buttstock. This little number features a lot of adjustability via length of pull plates, and I’ve got it down to an extremely comfortable and handy 12.75” LOP. The angle of the grip is very comfortable and overall a great upgrade!

Next, since losing the capacity of the Speedfeed stock I added a Velcro side saddle via an Esstac 6-round sleeve stuck directly to the side of the shotgun.

I’ve used this setup in the past and it’s about tops. Thumbing shells into the Mossberg is a cinch with this sidesaddle. FAR faster than the Speedfeed. Single loading through the port is lightning quick, too.

Last, a GG&G forward sling mounting plate and a Vickers 2-point sling rounded everything out. Weapons retention is key!

The gun has an excellent balance to it now and feels a lot more maneuverable. With 11 rounds onboard of 12 gauge high brass, it’s pretty awesome.

The ghost ring sights make this little gun a natural with Fosters or Brennekes. I’ve always been a massive fan of slugs. Pretty hard to argue against a .70+ caliber one ounce or more chunk of lead cruising along faster than a .357 magnum. Can anyone say “channel changer?”

I live rural so over penetration isn’t a big concern. I think this will be my dedicated “slug gun”, hence the nickname “Lil’ Slugger”

Overall, I’m very pleased. Police trade in shotguns are one heck of a value and force to be reckoned with!!

3 observations about Mossberg shotguns:

(1) They aren’t pretty
(2) Their action make more racket than anything else
(3) They work.

My shotgun is a Benelli M2 Tactical, full pistol grip. Also with ghost ring rear sight. 3 shot groups with the old fashioned Rem slugs will go 2-2.5 inches at 50 yards.

There’s a guy in Colorado, that will do a fine trigger job on your shotgun, for not much money. You just send the trigger group to him, and it’ll be back in 2 weeks.
